I realize there a few hours left, but I am unlikely to move the needle any before the end of the day so I'll go first.

First 2018 was a highwater mark for me so I was unlikely to match the 2,700+ miles I did last year.

I had some challenges at the beginning of the year which likely killed my totals, but overall I feel positive going into the next decade.

Total 2,400 miles
1,045 of that was on my Radwagon E-bike. I am hesitant to include those miles at all, except that those are miles that I would have had to otherwise use my car. So you can put an Asterisk next to them if you like, but I'll call it a win. 😉

That still leaves a fairly respectable 1,355 miles. Split amongst a dozen or so different bikes.

Next to my e-bike the next highest mileage total was on the Eastern Growler, 26" BMX Cruiser I call Big Baby, because she's pink. 226 miles
3rd surprisingly is my Clementine @ 223 miles! I say surprisingly, because I just don't feel like I ride it that much and less than I otherwise would because it's too awkwardly big to take on the train.
4th. Crust Bombora, well honestly when you consider I've only been riding this a few months this year it really should be like #2 I ride it ALL THE TIME! I ride it so much that I make a concerted effort to ride other bikes, just so they get ridden.

Of note the next in mileage is my stainless steel SOMA Triple Cross. Notable, because even though I don't ride it as often as I'd like when I do ride it, it's typically on the more epic range. 20+ miles per trip.

The down side of having quite a few bikes, is that some don't get ridden more. My Atlantis would probably be up near the top, except it spent a considerable time with a rear flat thats resisted fixing.

Oddly my mileage has dropped for reasons that seem somewhat contradictory; I got laid off from my job that was 13.4 miles from my house and the new job is 16.3 miles from the house. The rub is that this additional 3 miles each way adds considerable time & effort to a commute that was already challenging. This was one reason I got the E-bike and why it's chocked up so many miles. I just couldn't spend the time to ride to work as much.😥

Anywayz, what's your story?

Masmojo,
Congrats on the 2400 miles. Commuting miles are hard earned!
I got a personal best 3300 miles this year.
2700 were commuting miles mostly on my 1994 Bridgestone RBT.
I rode 600 miles or so on my Hunqapillar.
Photos is both bikes attached.
A goal for this year is to spend more time riding the Hunq.
Happy New Year,

1852 miles after today's 33 mile ride. I have long suffered from chronic depression, and thus ride the equivalent of about half the weeks in a year, with the added complication that, after a layoff, recovery now takes longer when you are old. I managed to do 4K/year back when I commuted across town to an office job, and my goal nowadays is 3K/year. Still, I'm rather proud of the 1852 (that includes just shy of 200 miles on the hopefully soon-to-be-sold Dahon Hon Solo, most -- not all -- of which were very short grocery and dog-run trips.

The depression is simply a fact of life to be dealth with and things could be far, far worse, so no more about that. I'm just glad I got as many very pleasant miles in as I did this past year. And I think I put well under 1K miles on my car (tho' my daughter add ~2.5K; ~1700 since last oil change at 6/24/19, almost all my daughter's. I live within ~10 miles of just about everything I need, and in pleasant riding conditions; thank God.

- 3 bikepacking trips, totaling two weeks, one of which went as planned.
- 3 new gates closing off forest service roads to private property. Ah, the joys of new Colorado, where land owners experience too much abuse of privilege of access and simply shut it down.
- Countless old Colorado "self service" gates that allow access and ask only curtesy, including closing it behind you ... assuming you can puzzle out how to 1. open it and 2. close it again. Some of these have been there for over seventy years.
- 100% of the days my. brain allowed me to ride, I rode.
- 80% of milage was blessed active contemplative prayer; 20% were attempts to reach such a state. Not bad, room to improve. Grin.
- Unknown word count produced at the writers' nooks.
- 95% of rides I returned better than I left.
- 100% of rides I paid zero attention to stats, and only on bikepacking trips did I care about milage (sort of) for sustainability and navigation (map and compass).
- 3-4 times did I use my phone GPS app (Gaia GPS, with Trail Illustrated Maps), zero of those proved more helpful than paper map and compass.
- 1 phone map subscription canceled. Grin.
- 100% of my rides and milage were delightful and with wild abandon, one way or another, perhaps most especially the overextended ones at the end of the day after unexpected reroutes just hoping to find a place to pitch me tent. Grin.

Happy and blessed New Year! May God startle you with joy!

With abandon,
Patrick

I had a good year even with lots of challenging weather here in Minneapolis (polar vortex temps down to -30 and the wettest year in recorded history). Managed a bit over 8,000 miles, about 20% of those miles were commuting to the office. I would guess another 20% were on non-paved surfaces (snow, gravel or dirt). I've been using Strava to track mileage and hours since sometime in 2013. It’s been fun!

3833 road miles plus some neighborhood noodling that doesn't get logged. renovelo-ed the Rambouillet (bought new at RBW in 2006) as an upright townie and the Road as a light racy short brevet bike. Both are smashing successes. About 1,000 miles each on the Riv Road (frame came from this list in 2008 or 9) and Waterford RS-12 (frame came from this list in 2018). About 900 on an '83 Maruishi made 650B conversion (bike came from this list in 2008, can you sense a pattern here?) and 777 on the Ram. Over 56K miles since realizing in 2001 as an out of shape and overweight adult that I needed to get off the couch. Best by far has been the friendships forged all over the region where I live and seeing the power of a bike to draw diverse people together over a shared love and find out that no matter who they are, they have other shared interests to talk about.

Next big thing is the Selma55 ride 2/22/20. I co-organized the ride 5 yrs ago for Selma50, and am a helper this year. People from all over the US are coming, and there are lots of come-ups to handle. 2019 was a good year for our RUSA region and we look for growth in 2020, including a new 600K route that I think will be very popular. Our 1st 100 & 200 rides are this Saturday so no time lost in that area.

Riding 50 miles on wet roads and coming back all sand splattered on Saturday finally got me started on installing some smooth and shiny Honjos that have been in the box in the attic for God only knows how long.

Wishing all my fellow Riv-sters a happy and healthy 2020, and lots of bike time.

A relevant aside. At a pee stop during this morning's ride, I talked to an older man riding a tadpole recumbent. He had been an avid cyclist but had a stroke about 6 years ago, so he bought his tadpole. Retired, he rode 7,500 miles this past year.

Total miles: 6952.  Best month: May/650.  Worst month: September/443.  The majority of which was commuting (21 miles round trip) but I do like to go out on weekends as well.  The majority of my rides was on my butternut Appaloosa.  When the weather was nice, I took out my beloved (now repurposed) Soma San Marcos.

Patrick:  I like how you count your mileage.  Sunrises/sunsets I got to enjoy on my commutes along the beach: priceless.  It is not about the destination but the journery :)

I had a down year. After 5000 miles in 2018 I had been shooting for 6200 miles (10,000 km) but did not come close. I rode 2450 miles, most of it commuting. I hope to get back on track for 2020. My highlight may be that I rode a ton of bikes with not a ton of miles on any of them. My stable is massive and dialed right now, which is a good place to be.

Mine are very modest compared to the rest of the posters here. I only live a mile from work, so my total for the year was 895 miles, comprising 543 rides. Approximately 1445 kilometers, versus the prior year’s 625 miles / 1005 kilometers. I built up a Cheviot early in 2019, which has become my main commuter bike, with dynamo lighting, and I got a chameleon green Clem L in October which is my shopping bike. I also have an Appaloosa and a Roadini. I log miles with my apple watch so I don’t have a breakdown of the miles per bike.
I only drove to work 28 times in 2019, the last of which was April 7th, mostly because of the wet winter in SoCal . This year I am hoping to bike to work every day.

Pedaling an Atlantis and a SamH I clocked in at 1,506 miles (modest number as well). Mostly accumulated from errands and a part-time commute at 14-17 miles per ride (various routes). A few longer rides were sprinkled in as well. Sharing my riding time with regular yoga classes and weekly tennis. Entering my seventh decade it's all about staying healthy and off meds. So far so good.

Hoping 2020 brings some diverse and higher mileage rides with friends old and new.

Wishing everyone on the list and at Riv HQ a happy, healthy and successful 2020!

I just made a video on Instagram with my 2020 biking goal of 1000 miles. But then I figured out how to add up all 2019’s miles on my Apple Watch and realized I had 1,019.65 for this year. I guess I should shoot for 1300 instead. My numbers are pretty modest, but I live so far out in suburbia and in the mountains that 1000 miles is more than most people get. Next time we move I’m pushing HARD for a bikeable community.

Strava, which I try to use most of the time says 4638 miles for the year, so around 5 g's with some nondigitized rolls. Unfortunately cut short due to a majorly mashed right clavicle on November 27th, necessitating 8 screws and a titanium collarbone lug/splint. Minus a long day with the 25th anniversary Riv ride crew and some Northern Bronx routes, my miles were accrued on the streets of NYC, so maybe not always enviable but well earned miles nonetheless...

Not enjoying my subway commute/looking forward to the go ahead from my bone doctor (February maybe?)

Kai, awful. That is an impressive log of miles, and I’m so sorry it was cut short. I’m curious about what caused your crash (you don’t have to answer) and what happened next. Could you get yourself to the ER? What did you do with your bike? Did bystanders help you? Is your bike still rideable? I wish you a speedy recovery and hope this doesn’t discourage you from riding your bike. So sorry!

Dorothy, awesome! I love your goal for 2020. I also loved reading about your bikes - I, too, want a Cheviot with dynamo lighting! We’re kindred spirits since I have the 2019 Clem L (blue) and am also using my Apple Watch to log miles. I downloaded Map My Ride and used it yesterday for the first time, but I also used the Apple Watch activity app and doing so sucked my battery dry. I deleted Map My Ride and will stick with Apple’s app, now that I know I can count the year’s miles.

2019 was a good riding year for me. I enjoy riding at least as much at this juncture as I ever have.
  • 4100 total miles (3200 miles in 2018), mostly commuting on the Hunqapillar. I also explored more of the country roads in Napa on my Romulus (the only bike I have without fenders or racks).
  • Lost 30 lbs and feel like I'm in my 20's again!
  • Eroica CA was a blast last last April. It's great meeting up with crusty oldsters (like me!) from the Peninsula I've known since "back in the day"
  • Met a bunch of like-minded folks during the Riv XXV campout in Sam Taylor Park.  Lamentably, this was my only bike camping trip of 2019.  I need to spend more time in Marin County in 2020....
  • Went to Spain on vacation in May and re-connected with friends from the venerable shop where I worked in 1991, Bicicletas Otero. Heading back there in September 2020 to help as a volunteer with their annual ride, La Clásica Otero.
Happy 2020, everybody!

Kai, I'm so sorry about your injury. May you have a speedy recovery without any complications or long term negative effects!

My daughter lives in Brooklyn so I'm familiar with your riding environment. Almost five thousand miles in 2019 primarily on the streets of NYC is definitely well earned! Enviable? Yes. Kudos to you!!!

Best wishes,

Mileage was modest, but I'm proud to report that I (just barely) topped 50,000 ft. of climbing in 2019.

Dorothy, sounds like you are living the dream to me!? 4 Rivendells, no waiting.
I expect you have the problem I frequently find myself with which is the bike I am riding may not be the one I want to ride, but the one that doesn't need a flat fixed or some other maintenance done! 🤣

Along the lines of Patrick's story, several years ago I passed an older gentleman who was pushing his bike up a small hill ( I SO wish I had taken his picture). I thought he had a mechanical, so I stopped to check on him. He said "no problem, I just can't get up these hills anymore like I used to. The doctor told me to ride a bike for my heart so I bought this bike".
Judging by the bike that was probably 30 years ago!
Then he said "I'm 86 I can't go as good anymore"
I said "your doing better than me, I'll be worm dirt WAY before 86!"

Amazing!
