SQL Server update notifications to Rabbitmq

I have SQL server 2012 Service broker populating a queue via a trigger on table updates. I need to communicate these updates with an already setup rabbitmq environment.

The only documentation i can find is sql-to-sql service broker setup.

Can someone assist ?

By using SQLCLR you can post from the database to a Rabbit endpoint. In fact, we are using that a lot where I work.

Thanks for your response. I am not very adapt at .NET programming, only T-SQL. 

A couple questions, if I may:

Are there a great many objects i need to create? 

Is the actual connection to rabbitmq defined in EAServiceCongif.xsd

Could you possibly suggest where i might find detailed steps to guide me through setting this up?

Hi Jim,

First of all, I would ditch Service Broker, altogether. When it first came out, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. After having used it for many years in a very high throughput OLTP environment, we try to stay away from it. We can discuss why that is the case on another thread.

In order to do this you would need to create one SQLCLR assembly who references the RabbitMQ Client dll. In the assembly you have a post method, which takes the message you want to send as input parameter. If messages are going to different endpoints, you should probably send in some sort of endpoint id, from where the connection string to Rabbit can be deduced.

We have a table with various connection strings with Id's, and the SQLCLR assembly reads them into memory at startup. When it then gets a packet to send, it looks at the Id, grabs the correct connection and sends it. Oh, also at startup, the assembly creates the connections and keeps them open (for performance).

I don't know of another method in which to communicate from MS SQL Server to Rabbitmq. The rabbitmq environment already exists and is in use on the Oracle side of the house.

Does using the CLR assembly mean i don't have to worry about External Activator(EA): E:\Program Files\Service Broker\External Activator\Config\EAServiceConfig.

I will work on creating the SQLCLR assembly today, if time permits, This assembly will get initiated by the Service Broker queue correct? 

 I only have one endpoint(Rabbitmq queue) to populate with messages.

You don't have to worry about the External Activator at all. If you still want to keep SSB in the picture, you could have a queue reader proc reading off the SSB queue and call the SQLCLR assembly who'd post to Rabbit.

Thank you, i have been banging my head against this SSB process. The book i am using(Pro Sql server 2008 service broker) doesn't address non-sql processing.

I am not committed to SSB, just not aware of an alternative method of feeding Rabbitmq from SQL.

If there is a more efficient method, i am very much open to it.

Hi Jim,

How are you inserting data in the table in the first place, by stored procedures? If that is the case you could have a "hook-point" in the procedure(s), which calls the SQLCLR method which posts to Rabbit. That's what we are doing here, and we are looking at volumes of 400 - 500 messages / sec.

Our volume is no where near that, maybe a few hundred insert/updates a day on this table.

Since i already SSB installed and a trigger on the table populating the queue in my test environment, I believe i'll deal with creating the SQLCLR assembly, then firing it from a Queue reader proc. would you happen to have any sort of shell for that assembly which will call Rabbitmq.

Hi Niles,

Is it accurate that your blog is usually posted on Friday? I was able to communicate from a .net in to Rabbitmq, now my only hold up is having a queue reader proc pass my trigger info to the SQLCLR assembly who'd post it to Rabbitmq.

Niels, yes I'll clean it up prior to implementing, i still have some work to do, but this was a major help. If i may ask one more question. 

I am able to select one column out of a queue:

SELECT casted_message_body = 

CASE message_type_name WHEN 'X' 

  THEN CAST(message_body AS NVARCHAR(MAX)) 

  ELSE message_body 

END 

FROM [ServiceBrokerTest2].[dbo].[TargetQueue] WITH(NOLOCK)

 1 48837  1001

 1 48838  1001

 1 48839  1001

 1 48840  1001

how can i 'receive' only this portion? it's the only portion i wish to send to Rabbitmq.

I figured out my own answer(not sure gmail deletes).

Again I cannot thank you enough for your assistance, i have it working end to end in our dev environment now, just need to  fine tune and clean up.
