Hello,

I really like the concept of qubes and I'm excited to try it out.
Everything goes smooth when installing qubes, until the very end of the
installation, when qubes tries to 'create service VMs' & when the progress
bar says 'starting qubes networking' my computer just freezes. I waited
for 10min but nothing happened.
I also tried reinstalling but the exact same problem happened.
Can I fix this somehow? Should I just click 'dont create any VMs' although
its not recommended?

Thanks in advance.

Were you installing an XFCE only version of Qubes?

No, I was using the default option.

However I just tried installing the XFCE only version and I got the
following:

creating default networking VM failure traceback (worst recent call last)
file "usr/bin/qvm-pci", line89, in <module>
main ()

file "usr/bin/qvm-pci", line 52, in main qvm_collection_lock_db_for_writing()

file "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/qubes/qubes.py", line 499, in
lock_db_for_writing

self.qubes_store_file=open(self.qubes_store_filename,'rt')
IOerror:[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/lib/qubes/qubes.xml'

After that it exits with the 'Do not create any VMs' option.
After that I'm getting to desktop with the following pop-up message:

"Whoops. A critical error has occured. This is most likely a bug in Qubes
manager."

IOerror: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/lib/qubes/qubes.xml'
at line 4 of file /usr/bin/qubes-manager

Can that be fixed? I really want the KDE desktop :/

Thank you!

That's OK. I don't think the XFCE only installation method currently works anyway with the latest release.

On your default install, are you able to still access the log files of your boot to get an idea what the problem is?

Correct, the R2 rc1 installer does not work with XFCE only.

Also I would check the HCL to see if your computer model is in the list and how it goes.

I attached the boot.log.
After the freeze during "starting qubes networking", I have to turn off my
system via power button. On restart I'm prompted to create a new user acc
but it still recognizes the one I created on the first install(so I cant
create a account with the same name obviously) which resulted in the
freeze. However after that I can get to the desktop and log in with both
accounts. But none of my networking is working.

I also checked the HCL as suggested. The system I'm trying to install
Qubes is a Alienware M17x and is not listed.

Try to disable VT-d in bios and test again. I remember similar problem on
other hardware caused by broken bios/VT-d support/driver.

Apologies for adressing my last post wrong. Forgot to add a subject.
I managed to fix it and finally installed qubes correctly.
In case anyone cares or tries to install qubes and runs into the same
problem, here is what I did:

1. Disable your ethernet controller in bios
2. Just install qubes like you normally would
3. At the very end of the install check 'Only create default VMs' instead
of the first option which includes the AppVMs
4. Log in with your account, after that restart your system and re-enable
your ethernet controller in bios.
5. Boot
6. Now manually add your network cards device id's to the netvm

$ lspci
......[not mentioning all other devices that were listed]
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation MCP79 Ethernet (rev b1)
$ qvm-pci -a netvm 00:0a.0

Done.
Maybe this helps someone else aswell :)

Cans you please run the hcl-report script (as described here:
http://qubes-os.org/trac/wiki/HCL) and send the results?

Thanks.

I've had a similar problem on my Alienware M14x r1. However it doesn't "crash" during install,, it is more random. It could happen 2 minutes into loading the login screen, or 5 hours later after I've got Xen running with Windows7.

Everytime it is identical, all input devices freeze (tried with USB devices, or the inbuilt ones), and the only option is to power off by holding the power button down.

Have you, seeing as you're running an Alienware, had any further problems running Qubes since disabling and re-enabling the ethernet card? I initially thought it was graphics driver related because the system doesn't seem to panic, there's no log of a kernel panic, and the error seems to only happen in X.

I'm having the same problem.
My machine is hanging onto the network setup.
I disabled the card in bios but no success.

Can anyone help?

Thx
