Hi, all!

I've just got to know and install Qubes and am really excited about it. But I miss some apps from Ubuntu desktop (KDE/LXDE), especially regarding easy and quick visual network monitoring.

I use the very nice "gkrellm" app for such things as visual monitoring of network, disks, cpu activity, and am wondering if there's any similar app that I can use in Qubes. Anybody has any hint?

Thanks and regards!

By default, dom0 has no network access, so for network monitoring, you'd
probably want to install something in sys-net (the default NetVM). There have
been many discussions on this list about using network monitoring tools in
this way. Here's are a couple of recent ones:

* https://groups.google.com/d/topic/qubes-users/CJzwmcOR-Jk/discussion
* https://groups.google.com/d/topic/qubes-users/JWtELZAnqRk/discussion

By contrast, for things like disk and CPU activity, you'd want to install the
monitoring software in dom0.

On R3.1, KDE is the default desktop environment, and it already includes
widgets for monitoring disk and CPU activity. You can simply enable those in
dom0.

On R3.2, XFCE is the default desktop environment, but you can still install
KDE if you prefer it:

In all cases, note that installing and running programs in dom0 is not without
risk. If dom0 is ever compromised, then the whole system is effectively
compromised. You can read all about updating and installing software in dom0
here:
