Guys I'm struggling with my car been a pain in the ****

Spec as follows
2+2, CVH with mechanical fuel pump, manual carb. Nothing fancy.
Fuel filter, non expensive clear type, before the pump.
The only non petrol thing is the fuel tank been a diesel one. This has the take off low on the tank.

The problem. I have had problems with either misfiring or cutting out & not starting.
The main problem I can see is that my fuel filter is more full of air than fuel. Also I have a lot of bubbles coming into the filter on the suction side. I have a new pump & filter. Also I did have a different carb on it which gave the same problem.

Any ideas as to why I could be getting this air / bubbles in the fuel filter?

Hope the above makes sense.
Thanks
Mark

Have you checked the filter on the pick up in the tank ? I had the same problem with my diesel 2+2, now have an inline filter before the fuel pump.

I may be way off base here, but wouldn't you want the filter upstream of the pump ie on the pressure side,
Nigel

Just to prove the fuel supply fault, can you gravity feed from a bottle or similar to see if the misfire is cured?

I have run engines merely by spraying carb cleaner into the carb intake direct.
I have to say that I did away with a mech pump on my Dolly Sprint and had an electric one and a filter king to get just the right pressure (1.5 psi SU carbs or 3.5 psi for Weber DCOE).
Good luck
Jon

The inline filter that I fitted was to replace the one in the tank, stops any muck getting into the pump. I now have an easily replaceable filter, rather than one in the tank. From past experience the filter in the tank gets restricted over many years & can cause the symptom Mark is experiencing, I first had this happen on an Escort Sport way back in the 70's.

Agree, my thinking was that there is a coarse filter on the pick up as you mention which stops crud getting to the pump, but if too fine a filter was on the pick up side it could cause flow problems/ cavitation.  Was just a thought.
Did the problem gradually come and get worse or did it suddenly appear?

In both cases the problem suddenly appeared, the car would start, the Escort with twin choke Weber, was OK if only the throttle was not opened far, when it cut out it would not restart for about 10 mins & if driven slowly would be OK. The diesel in the 2+2 would misfire at low revs, when driven over 30 MPH would cut out, but start again. In both cases removal of the filter in the tank & fitting an inline one cured the problem, the 2+2 has done about 25,000 miles since changing the setup. On my Rickman I have removed the filter & fitted an inline one, just as a preventative measure.

Did you change the rubber hoses as well as the pump?
I’ve got the same air thing in my inline filter and am starting to suspect the hoses have gone.
Also is your dizzy cap loose? If the screws aren’t tight then the spark can burn out the rotor arm (BTDT).
I’ve found that the dizzy cap screws can get loose as there’s not alot of metal to screw into. I cured that with a couple of helicoils.

It seems we are all 'suffering' from the same general problem.  The Quantums just go on forever!  As such we are now seeing the ageing problems of systems and the need for a classic style rebuild/renovation every so often.

I have a friend who has worked for Ford in design for a long time and a few years ago he told me that the design life of the cars was 8 years!  If you got 10 years you have done better that they expected.  My Q 2+2 is 13 years on the road since I built it, with the original untouched 1989 (24 years old) CVH1600 engine, rear axle, etc.  I have recently realised we need Eddie and other enthusiasts to help us run what are now classic cars with classic car needs.  But with TLC they go on forever.  That's the interest and value for money for me.

So thanks to all the club members and their combined wisdom.  Keep the Quantums going.

Derek

Have you checked/replaced the flexible hose on the outlet of the tank? They are usually rubber & can perish & go porous.
I have had this on a few cars & it gives the symptoms shown

Thanks all.
Lots of useful info.

Its been a very sporadic when it happens. Usually when it gets warm. Have never had any fuel smells.

Looks like I'll have to change the short rubber connection between the tank & the 'metal' line to the front of the car. While I'm at it might change the metal line. As my outlet on the tank is low down (not like the petrol version, which is in the top) would there be a filter over the outlet in the tank?

A fault I suffered on the XR4x4 was a blocked fuel cap vent which made the car run strongly for a little while and then splutter and die. minutes later it would run normally........for a little while.
Indeed Quantums are classic kit cars and will be seen as such in the future, at the moment they are not very loved apart from ourselves but that will change when others see what we do.
