Hi all, my 2+2 has just failed it's MOT due to a spongy brake pedal, after some investigation it appears the master cylinder seals are shot & as such is filling the servo up with brake fluid.
I have searched virtually everywhere for a service kit but have been told that these are now extinct for the later (1988 > 1989) XR2 so my car is now sitting at my mechanics in bits whilst alot of head scrathing is taking place.
Someone told me that a non ABS Mondeo set up could be used although considerable work is required to fit this & the bar running along the bulk head needs to be made adjustable to enable the brake pedal to be adjusted but this seems to be more work than I'm willing to investigate further, has anyone else had this problem with a late XR2 based Quantum & if so how did you overcome this or does anyone know where a service kit could be obtained from or does another service kit from a different manufacturer fit?
Seems totally crazy that such a simple part from an 80's Ford cannot be obtained & makes me wonder how both MK2 XR2 owners & kit car owners are keeping their cars on the road if such simple service parts are no longer available?
Any help with this will be very, very much appreciated.
Cheers, Paul.

I got this;
Ford Sierra Brake Master Cylinder repair kit 1108
from biggred4u on ebay.
They swore blind that is was the same as the kit needed for the XR2 Girling (short black) master cylinder.
I don’t know if it did fit ‘cos when I started stripping the master cylinder down several things threatened to break, so I replaced the whole unit (£300).

Hiya

Mine failed a few years ago - be careful - there are 2 types.  One is a cast body, and one is a pressed steel body.  The difference is the brake pipes are in the wrong place.  The mechanic had to get a whole new assembly - the cost was around £180 (!) for the part alone.

Had a quick look for the receipt, but it must be in the infamous 'safe place', and is not with my other stuff.  Unfortunately the mechanic who sourced has now retired, but if you get desperate I can email him and see if he can remember who he used for it.  No idea when he will reply as he is touring the south of France.

How about - pressed steel

Cast Unit

or

Repair Kit

Paul said his was the later Mk2 Fiesta donor so that is the short stubby pressed steel master cylinder.
There is no alternative for this without changing the servo and brackets as well.

The Mk3 (and probably the Mk4) Fiesta master cylinders can be used to replace the early Mk2 Fiesta cast iron cylinders, I've done that myself.
But the holes are at a different angle completely on the later Mk2 Fiesta.

They are also often thrown away i think as the brake fluid attacks the paint on them (good thinking that Ford) and they get very rusty on the outside.

Jim.
Can you email your email address to me at in...@dynamicmouldings.co.uk please

I have 2 pictures to send you in the hope that you can get them on this post list.

It shows how a Fiesta Mk6 servo assembly has been fitted in a Fiesta Mk2 race car. Looks like an easy solution, but as ever a picture speaks a 1000 words.

Hi all, thanks for your excellent responses, I have ended up purchasing a kit via ebay as mentioned by Chris G below as my mechanic said it looks the same as what has been removed so hopefully this will do the job & for £17.25 seemed worth having a gamble with!
Will keep you updated as to whether this actually works as might be useful for some other owners out there.
Unfortunately once the 2+2 has a full MOT is will have to be placed up for sale, so if anyone is looking for a stunning 2+2 let me know & I will send you all the info.

Cheers, Paul.

Don’t fit one if you are going to need an IVA as it will fail.
Any brake balance bars need to have the adjustment nuts welded up before they will pass an IVA

I’m not sure from the picture if it fits in the engine bay directly behind the brake pedal or if it replaces the servo.

Yes, it's not clear where or how it's fitted and I suspect it's mainly
used in motorsport but it might be worth looking into. Would be good to
get some instructions. I'm sure I've seen it in a catalogue - maybe
Burton Power or Rally Design.

Description in Burton Power catalogue says "these simply bolt in place of the original servo assembly and provide a front and rear brake bias without having to modify the pedal box".
Very interesting me thinks

I have an alert for Ford master cylinder running on Ebay, and I'm pretty sure it came up with seal sets a few days ago. I've not paid much attention to the search lately, having bought a new master cylinder a short while ago. I bought the master cylinder (short one for '87 XR2) from Mister Auto, after much tooing and froing........... They said a couple of times it was in stock, then it wasn't and they quickly refunded, and some emails later I bought it from their European store and it eventually arrived, cost was under £80. So it may be worth trying Mister Auto for the master cylinder you require. (but you may have to persevere)

Saw the 2nd hand XR2 servos on E-Bay on the 18th, bought one straight away as I rarely see them, also got a master cylinder seal kit (looks like the right one, find out soon). Hopefully I can do a little refurb before I fit it and get the brakes back to how they should be.
For those interested in trying something else, according the www.xrtwo.com forum, the mk4 Escort servo is "pretty much a straight swap". Their words not mine so no guarantees!

Where did you get the seal kit.
Does it include the white plastic part?

Hi Hans

Found the seal kit on E-Bay. I'm not even sure it's the right one but the bits in the photo looked similar to the drawings in the Haynes manual so I decided to give it a go. I can't see a white plastic part in the picture but the part number for the kit is: SP7760. (I assume that's the Lucas part number.)
Hopefully the picture I have will be here.

Regards
Dave English
