Hi can anyone give me some guidance . Just tried to start my Extreme and the electric fuel pump sounded very slow and reluctant. I then started to get a slight burning smell. I am sure the pump has seized and bunt out. I have removed the o/s/r wheel and can only just see the pump on top of the tank. Is there an easy way of getting to this?

you've just gotta take the rear grp section off.. It isn't that hard as long as you can undo the wiring easily.  on both of mine I've had there are two bolts in the boot and then two at the bottom of the wheel arches. then the tub will lift off.. (frustratinlgly it will break any sealing done round the top by the roll bar.)

my fuel pumps have been mounted behind the pass seat or opposite on the boot.

hope this helps somehow even tho it is frustrating news!

I've been in touch with QMC this afternoon who suggested neatly cutting a small access in the upper boot inner wall and replacing with an access panel cover after poss stainless? He did say this area was not a load or stress area? What's your thoughts on this.

As chris says, take the rear tub off, it seems a big job, but is actually quite easy. When you put a new one on, put it on the bulkhead behind the passenger seat, per Chris above, ghen you can easily access with just taking the rear NS wheel off.

Is your car injection or carb? Mine is injection and the tank outlet is on the tank bottom, so am a little puzzled why the pump is on top, unless this is how earlier ones were plumbed with carbs and low pressure pump.

Note also when removing the tub, you will likely have to remove harnesses at the top, where they attach throigh the tub and also there maybe two self tappers behind the seats holding the tub panel against frame. There are also two fasteners at the front botyom of the wheel arch, to stop it flapping around.

Hi Chris,
Very interesting link, I’d not realised that the newer petrol was that much of a problem.

Mine an injection. The fuel pump in on the top of the tank inside what looks like a metal cage/ mounting? Today I cut into the wires that go up to the pump as i cant even reach these at the pump itself. No voltage at the supply. I connected direct to a spare battery and the pump spins like a good un. Engine started so not the pump now but power supply. I now need to trace back, poss a relay or wire fault?

There will be a relay near the fusebox which is usually located under the scuttle on passenger side, check that and the fuse. Good luck.

have you got the xtreme manual ? it contains the factory supplied wiring diagram. (although I don't recall a relay as it is written for carb.)

The zetec with injection had an addendum to the manual, showing the fuel pump wiring.

Yes I have the build manual but there is no ref to fuel pump relay. It does mention fuel pump wiring on the rear connection section but the colours are not the same? Man says white/purple and black earth. Wires to my pump are brown and black/red? There is no amendment page in my manual?

Haven't been able to check the car yet but have checked the Zetec build manual and Omex wiri8ng diagram.
Connector pin 3 (blue wire) of the Omex 500 is an aux used for a relay powering the fuel pump, coil pack, injectors and lambda.  There is a wiring diagram for this in the Zetc/ Omex supplement.  Can scan and send if you wish.

On a separate note, I see your e mail address 'via gelia'  this was the local name given to the road from Newhaven to Cromford, near where I grew up in Buxton.  Is there a connection!

Brown (Earth) and Black/Red (Supply) are Fords standard wire colours for the
fuel pump on a donor Sierra.
Maybe somebody used the Ford fuel pump connector and some of the wiring for
the fuel pump.

Bit of a cock up. Took manual to work, forgot to bring it home and am not planning to be at work tomorrow. I may swing by, but if not will be wednesday. Tbh if you google omex 500 wiring diagram, there are loads, the main difference being the source of the main feed.

You stil live in Derbys?

Bingo?
Found two additional relays (with integral fuse ?) never seen these type before, tucked up way out of sight above the heater vent piping. One with a very doggy fuse that had been getting hot for some time with the looks of it. replaced complete relay with same type and new fuse hey presto running again. Shame its raining now don't want to get my car wet. Boy is it tough lying upside down with yer head in the foot well?  Thanks to all for your interest, idea's and info,

Dave

Aha getting down there is not so bad, working is difficult, but getting out is almost impossible and I am past 60 and sometimes wonder why I still tinker until I see the faces of some folk driving boring old euro boxes and suddenly I am sure I will die a petrolhead.
