We would like to provide our stage manger with the waveform view while an audio cue is running. Is there a way to output only that view? We use mac mini's for audio playback. Thank you.

You can only do this for specific cues by sending an NDI scan converted QLab window over to NDI monitor app running on another computer.

If you describe in detail what the stage manager is using the view for, there may be a simpler solution

For a recent show I did a simple Zoom screen share of our QLAB session to a laptop at the SM’s station so she could see the cue list and the timers.
A 2-user-only Zoom can go on for 24 hrs for free.

Hi Mic,

Thank you for your response. We do have access to NDI scan converter and monitor app. This is how we typically solve this issue.

I am researching getting a new QLab system which would consist of two mac mini's in a sonnet rack and a local monitor for the operator so we could take it on the road. I am open to suggestions on what to get the stage manager. The sound desk and the stage monitor desk maybe some distance from each other. I'd typically use coax or fiber to bridge.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thank you for your suggestion. I'm afraid the stage manager needs to see it as close to instant as possible. - Lisa

The simplest thing would probably be an HDMI extender over cat5 mirroring the main operators monitor to a second monitor at the SM position.

I can’t see that there would be much advantage in adding the complexity of scan converting a specific area of the screen, particularly as the waveform for a currently playing cue would not necessarily be visible in a separate window  without complex programming.

The times in the active cues window are usually sufficient for cueing purposes.

If you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch kicking around, QLab Remote is free for view-only mode and provides just what an SM needs for this kind of situation.

As a stage manager for ballet who often needs to call cues based on time, it might be easier to just let them see the active cues some how and have them record down time indexes for their cues. Because I often only have one paper tech where we watch a video of our shows before we hit the theatre I use time indexes for many of my cues, at least as a warning for visuals. I also run the sound cues from my backstage position which helps but...

Hey, bingo. That’s a fantastic idea. I have QLab remote too, never thought of it 😊

But Sam, for QLab 5, it would be handy if you could flag a cue and have it display a live waveform and it’s progress somewhere on the screen. For us dance stage managers it really would come in handy.

You might consider a solution where the SM is viewing the audio waveforms in a DAW like Reaper. Then you have to slave the playback via LTC:

Put the audio files in a DAW at sensible places. Put the same audiofiles in a group cue together with a LTC cue (starting at said sensible places). Send the LTC audio signal over the audio network (being analog or digital. Be very careful with routing cause the signal is at full scale!). Capture the LTC signal through a soundcard connected to the SMs computer. Make the DAW slave to this incoming LTC timecode.

The SM can now zoom/mark/look-ahead all the way she desires and even prep the show beforehand listening to the audio and marking at the same time. Import a video of a rehearsal in sync with the "original audio" and you can see the cues as well while prepping.

(Depending on your setup you can of course run the instance of the DAW also on your local computer and only send the video signal to the SM on a simple monitor without the need for an extra computer).
