Hi,

I started creating a game, but have recently found my motivation has been low to continue it. I think I've reached the dreaded middle of development. Rather than just let it sit, I thought I'd share what I had (possibly with the added prompt of doing more work on it).

Cheers,
-Kalev

oh, this is rad! didn't get past the hard level, but i like how it feels - there is a sense of urgency, and that it ... I dunno, it works pretty well in terms of being more complex than i initially thought it'd be.

What other stuff do you want to do with it?

Keep going with it - it's good!

I sort of fluked the hard level - my player disappeared but I still managed to finish. I couldn't make the other person follow me though...

I found a bug. You can go into the rock if you walk into the yellow lava you can complete almost every level like this.

This is good stuff.

You could have multiple spawn points for lava, ice blocks that block lava only for a short time, tunnels that commute lava to other level locations (or use them yourself as basic portals), etc.

Just a few more mechanics might make you realise what more you can do with just the basics.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I was still finding it difficult to start, so I've removed my perfectionist tendencies, and made another four levels which I'm not entirely happy with, but which suffice for the overall structure. I've also fixed the bug mentioned above.

My plan for this is:
- Make another 10 or so levels
- Refine my existing levels (possibly re-ordering them)
- Ice block?
- Figure out what to do about art (which I will probably want advice on) and narrative (which may make me shuffle levels around even more)

Hey yet another great game made with puzzlescript :).
I really like the mechanics, although I have not finished it yet. Good luck on tuning it.

This is really good! I like the way you have created a nearly unstoppable enemy with simple rules.

The level that was supposed to explain to me how friends work didn't seem to do the job, since I found the level after that confusing. I didn't realize that the friends were reacting to heat rather than my presence. I don't know how you could make this more clear though.

I can't beat your third level. I've tried it multiple times, and I presume I can't block the gap in time, but can't see another solution.
There's probably a trick or a rule that I'm missing.

Good luck with it!

I liked the third level, very clever. The best levels are probably those where it has both an interesting solution and you barely have enough time. The first friend level is fun, too. As for "Cooled Lava Intro", it is hard but I like it and it's not technically an intro because you see something similar in 4 - Block Reuse Intro.

Ice blocks would fit in well because they would be like a temporary slow down for lava but they would melt in X turns and it would keep things exciting. :D I'm not so sure about tunnels.

I still haven't beat the current final level - "Old Friend Level" - but I really want to and it's driving me nuts. o_O

I just had this idea:

Ice blocks might be able to stop lava if it cooled, unless they melted faster when surrounded by more lava blocks. This means careful placement would be crucial. I'd like to try to make an example, if you don't mind!

I apologise for not replying (of course you can do as you wish with the code) not viewing your example (nor even creating more of my own levels as I'd intended). It seems that having a second child has reduced my free time more than I'd thought possible.

I do hope to come back to puzzlescript someday, but I have no idea when that would be...

Congrats on the babby :)  Don't worry, hopefully it'll still be here for you to work on whenever you find you have time.

Best,

S

I've now found some time - my wife has taken the kids for an extended holiday while I stay home and work :p

I like the idea of the ice block, but it's not really the direction I want to take the game. If anyone wants to come up with a puzzle that uses the block, I'd love to see it, but I don't think it's something I'm giong to use.

Cheers,
-Kalev

Here's four new levels (plus an alternate). I'm starting to have trouble making them, as the complexity leads to too many alternate solutions to the ones I intend - and forcing there to be a single solution ends up making these levels much harder...

Just looked at it again for the first time in a long time but I still can't beat 9 - friend run complex

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I need to simplify that one. Did you try the new version? Be curious to know how you fare with level 11 (the third level in the new link).

Cheers,

OH MY GOD Level 9 is winnable! D:
You practically have to drag the guy into the safehouse! ;)

I swear that should be level 20. It kind of gets into game mechanics, knowing which way your "friend" is going to run when surrounded by lava.
Good game though! I hope you come back to it someday!

So I cofounded a game company two years ago: https://www.ludiclemur.com/

And we are thinking about remaking volcano, but I've switched computers since I last worked on the game, so the most recent version I have source for is the one from this thread.

I know I published the final game on NewGrounds: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/687254

What I'm wondering, is whether or not there is a way to get the 'hack' button for the final game, so I can see what else I changed?

Cheers,
-Kalev
