TIFF export

Hi

I am experiencing problems when exporting panos to TIFF, 16bit, with Alpha channels.

I do not see any Alpha channel and the TIFF shows up in Photoshop 2026 on layer 0 and not on the background. This is new – and I have not change anything in my settings. A bug?

Looks as if that was changed in v13. In v12 under Settings I could
choose between associated, unassociated, separate and no alpha.
"separate" gave a background image and an additional alpha channel.

v13 has only with or without alpha. "With alpha" gives a layer with
transparency, same as associated and unassociated in v12.

However, it is easy to get the separate alpha channel in photoshop: Do
Select -> Save Selection, then Select -> Load Selection, choose New
Channel and name it alpha. Last Press Ctrl+D to deselect. You can record
an action to have this as a one click solution. You can even create a
droplet (via ‘File’ -> ‘Automate’) and register this droplet as a
‘Viewer’ under ‘PTGui Tools’ -> ‘Options’ -> ‘Viewer’, so that it runs
automatically in Photoshop when you click ‘View’ on the ‘Create
Panorama’ tab.

The question is not whether and how this can be "solved" in Photoshop. The problem is that I am expecting a progress in a new (paid) upgrade – and here I see a loss of functionality, which has to be handled by a tedious procedure.

Therefore, I ask Joost to bring back the old functionality of a.) separate alpha channel selectable and b.) image appearing on the background instead of level 0.

For the moment I am tempted to go back to v12 since I do not see an advantage over v12 - for my personal needs, since my wishes are still on the wishlist and have never managed to enter a new release (cropping with selected aspect ratio).

But Apple will force us anyway to go for the very latest version if we want to work on their latest OSs...

output settings (With alpha / Without alpha). I wasn't aware that
Photoshop actually distinguishes between these different kind of alpha
channels. It will be reverted to the old behavior in the next update.

Hi Ashok,

Which settings did you use in PTGui (see the Settings button in the
Create Panorama tab)? You could try another compression setting and see
if that helps.

You can also try loading the tiff file back into PTGui and see if it is
indeed corrupt.

If you think there's a problem in PTGui, could you share your tif file
with me at sup...@ptgui.com? You might try if the problem also occurs
at smaller sizes so you don't have to upload such a large file.

Hi Joost,

I set .tif and it’ll not read by Photoshop but if save it in .dng then it’ll open. Earlier I use .tif in photoshop and these’re PhaseOne XT files and quite big around 200mb each files

Which settings did you use in PTGui (see the Settings button in the
Create Panorama tab)? You could try another compression setting and see
if that helps.

You can also try loading the tiff file back into PTGui and see if it is
indeed corrupt.

Does the problem also occur if you use only one source image? That would
make sharing the files managable. If you could share the project then I
can probably reproduce the issue.

Hi PTGui support,

I'm having this same issue; i tried all the .tiff  output options and they " seem to be unsupported or damaged"  (that's the notification in PS ACR and LR) but dng seems to not fail.
version is the latest (just upgraded)

Hmm, that is one setting i did not use in this project; export all .CR3 files to .tiff.
starting with some info:
75 src frames: 
in the project itself the advanced settings> used the optimizer with output " not bad"  as the pano src (source) frames were shot from hand causing some parallax.

how do i prepare the project for download/upload please?

Hi Rob,

Could you try and see if the problem occurs if you reduce the number of
source images? That would make the size manageable.

First save the project under a different name (File - Save As) so you
don't overwrite the original. Then select a number of images in Source
Images tab and press Delete/Backspace. Then stitch check if the problem
still occurs.

To share the project, upload all files to dropbox / google drive or a
similar service. If you don't have these, swisstransfer.com is a good
option.

Send the files to sup...@ptgui.com or post the download link here.

hi Joost, First time having time this week.
i retried in another project with much less files.

The trick seems not in the amount, but in the file type:

first time i tried "RAW"  (Cr3 files) and outputfile .tif (8-bit, zip +alfa; quality 100%) => won't open in lightroom but in photoshop it is opened
second time i converted from .cr3 to .tiff in lightroom then stitched same:  outputfile .tif (8-bit, zip +alfa; quality 100%)  won't open in lightroom but in photoshop it is opened.

in both cases i still need to crop.

im going to try and reinstall lightroom, to see it is wonky somewhere .
I'm not seeing anybody else having mentions issues so ...

Hi Rob,

Lightroom Classic doesn't support ZIP compression, I've opened an issue
with Adobe here:
