Hello all,

It's been a while since I've posted here, so I hope you're all keeping well.  I'm re-visiting a topic I enquired about back in 2013, namely use of an apogee Duet by someone who's blind.  at the time, I went for a Focusrite, however I now have the option to purchase a duet fairly reasonably.  So:  Has anyone played with one of these things in the meantime?  if so, how do you find it?  My instinct says that it's usable eyes-free, however I'm a relative novice in these matters so I'll defer to others' knowledge.
all the best,
Dónal

Hi Donald,

The Duet is very usable. I have the Duet II which I use for the occasional live recording or for capturing simple stereo audio when necessary. The Maestro control panel is mostly accessible. The main volume knob isn't visible but the Duet has a giant volume knob right on the unit itself. A few checkboxes are unlabeled but things start to make sense once you navigate around a bit. Here's a very important caveat: the Avid-branded version of the Duet is not accessible. Make sure what you're getting is an Apogee-branded Duet, preferably the Duet II. It's super solid, the pres are excellent and it's reliable.
HTH,
Slau

Hi Slau,

that’s great to hear. As I said, when we last discussed this about three years ago, I just went for a FocusRite with more ins and outs. It’s a nice unit, but the price on this one is far too good to miss, and I love the pre amps in it.

All the best,

Dónal

Hmm I wonder what if you installed the Apogee drivers instead of the Avid drivers if it would work? I am in the market for a new interface and apparently buying an avid duet tacks two years onto your current subscription.

My understanding is that it doesn't work with the Maestro software. When plugged in, the Apogee duet automatically launches the Maestro software. I think the Avid one has a proprietary application that also supposedly supports Windows. This was one of the things I was concerned about when I spoke with someone from Apogee at AES. He assured me, however, that they had no plans to support Windows. This Avid version, I believe, has a special situation that Avid got involved in concerning the software. Some folks at Avid were completely unaware of this Duet collaboration with Apogee. Strange scenario…

That would be a bummer if we couldn’t take advantage of that promotion.  I may reach out to Apogee to see if they are  able to explain how the units differ or if i can use the maestro with it.
