Hi there peoples,

Ok, this is probably so far beneath most of you that it doesn't bear asking, but I'm going to do so anyway.  Before I do, I just want to give a disclaimer:  I'm not an audio engineer, musician, or anything like that.  I'm actually an assistant prof. who teaches software development and HCI  who mucks around with audio stuff in whatever spare time is available.

So to the point.  I've got my hands on a Mackie MCU-Pro.  I've connected it up to Protools, and opened the mixing session from the fantastic Protools with speech tutorials..  Now:  Can any of you point me at an "idiot's guide" to using PT with a control surface?  I've done my work (and it's basic basic stuff) using keyboard only thus far.  I've produced a few podcasts, screencast audio tracks (and the like) but that's about it.  however, I may be undertaking an M.Sc. in music technology in the autumn, and part of that is based around Protools; so I'm trying to get a head-start.

Thanks again for any answers, and your patience.

Hi Donal,

Since the Mackie surfaces can be used with several workstations, any instructions would be provided by Mackie themselves. There are buttons and knobs that will do one thing in one dAW and another thing in a different dAW. Avid doesn't provide any specific information for third party surfaces. Those surfaces would have to operate in some type of HUI emulation (again, a Mackie standard) so I'd try looking there first. Most likely, you'd need to boot the surface into some type of Pro Tools mode or HUI mode. I know a couple of others on the list have had some experience with the Mackie surfaces. I'd venture to say that the experience was not intuitive and somewhat successful but I'll let them chime in.
Best,
Slau

Hi Slau,

Sorry, that was a badly phrased message on my part. I've made the necessary changes to the MCU-pro. Protools recognises it, so all that is good.

Where I need guidance, is, and this is just an example, tutorials on how to assign a track to a channel strip. How do I, again just for the sake of an example, ensure that the pan knob moves the track in the stereo field, or the fader adjusts the gain.

See, told you they were basic questions! *smile*

All the best,

Dónal

Hi Donal,
OK, briefly:
Tracks are not "assigned" to faders, per se. When all tracks are hidden, no faders will be active. If you change the show/hide status of one track in the track list table, the first fader will be that shown track, even if it's the third track in the list. The faders reflect all shown tracks in order of their appearance in the table. When you've shown more tracks than your surface has, you'll have to bank over to the next set of tracks so that fader 1 becomes the ninth shown track and fader 8 becomes the sixteenth shown track and so on.
By default, most surfaces with encoder knobs will default to pan and the faders will default to track volume. There are certainly a bunch more functions but those are very standard.
HTH,
Slau

Lovely, that's all I needed to get me started. Much obliged.

I have a Mackie unit I will help you and however I can with it. There are some things it just will not do in Protools. But the basic things it does very well. My rig is down at a time I can better answer your questions when I have everything up and I am sitting at it. Do you have the template layout that Mackie created for Protools?

Hi Ricky,
Really appreciate that. I suspect that, for what I'll end up using this for, it will do everything I need. No, I don't have those templates.

Cheers,

Dónal
