I'm sure this has been covered here before, but I need to tune vocals. What plugins has anyone here successfully used? I'm playing with a free one right now, and it's ok, but very basic. Thoughts?

Is one better than the other? I wish they'd make Melodyne usable for us. Not sure how it could be done, but the ability to edit and align group vocals like that would sure be great!

Yes, it would be nice. I myself think that auto tune is better than waves tune for us and I believe that you can tweak more parameters in auto tune. Also, don’t forget that a lot of tuning can be fixed with practicing good vocal technique.

Papa Bear,
How would you go about using auto tune to tune certain phrases to keep the vocal sounding natural?  Would I just select the audio of the phrases that need tuning and do it that way?  Thanks,
Brian

Lol that goes without saying! I have been recording since open reels, and we had no pitch correction then! Arguably the best music was made before pitch and time correction ever were invented. I still don't like to quantize much in my sequencing, but for this new bunch of singers we track... I digress! Lol

Just in case you did not know, Antares offers a trial of each of the auto tune plug-ins. H plug-in is fully fully authorized for a period of two weeks as I recall. Just a heads up so you can get the feel of the different options offered by each of their plug-ins.

The way I'm looking at things, EFX3 is basically Autotune 7 without the graphical interface, Live is 8 without FlexTune, and the way my demo's looking, that's inaccessible to us anyway. I'll probably buy a license for Live so I can still have the formant controls if I need them, but it seems a bit ridiculous to buy the full-function plug-in if we can't get at the features that makes it so advanced. Any thoughts?

I went with EF ex myself. Another point is they offer a pretty low upgrade price if you should wish to purchase auto tune eight. You can also buy EF ex on the popular auction site very very cheap. I think I paid $70 from a legitimate seller in Pennsylvania.

Ok, how would it work buying it from somewhere like that? In EFX, I like how you can turn on and off notes in the scale. For instance, the client I have up is singing in F, but there's a D-flat in the song, and I was able to add that note to the scale, and still keep her vocal in a major tuning. Super cool! I didn't have near this much control in Sonar!

Hi I have both waves tune and auto tune. Waves tune is most deffinatly the more natural  plug by a mile. But i’ve never been able to get it to work properly. I was told by some one on this list not long after I bought the thing that there are some accessibility issues with it. How ever if other people on here are using waves tune  with voice over, i’d be very happy to be corrected. The long and the short of it is I use auto tune. I use this in conjunction with waves sound shifter which is a pitch correction plug.

Hey brian. Well that’s how I do it. I do most of my tuning using audio sweet. I just sellect the phraze I want, and then apply the auto tune over it. Some tomes auto tune does not always make the right note choice, so if this happens, i will play around with pitch correction on the phrase before applying the auto tune. Although there may be a better way to do this in auto tune it self, but not really sure how.
A lot of people put autotune or waves tune over the insert, and use plugin automation to turn it on and off and adjust settings as needed. as yet i’ve not done this. As far as making it sound natural. well i can’t say i’ve found auto tune to bad. No it’s not perfect, but it works. But yes i’d much prefer to use waves tune, But i’m not sure we have that luxury.

I bought the Waves Gold bundle, and it came with Tune, but other than just throwing it in there and letting it do its thing chromatically, I haven't found a way to alter any of the parameters. Autotune it is then.

Basically when you buy from a seller on the auction site, they send you a code which you can enter on the Antares site for downloading your purchase. This is the same protocol if you bought the plug-in from musicians friend, guitar Center, sweet water and so on. It all comes down to the purchase code, or whatever they call it nowadays.

Awesome! Thanks man! I'll look into that! Nothing like saving a little money if I can.
