Hi,
Yesterday, I installed Thunderbird 78.2.2 and Provider stopped working. I tried to remove and reinstall the add-on and to uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird, but it didn't work. This is what I have in the debug console:

Try switching to TBsync instead of Provider.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply and for the suggestion. I tried it, but CalDAV spat out a bunch of sync errors.

Hi Chris & Lorenzo,
Same here. Mac OS X 10.14.4, Thunderbird 78.2.2 64 bit, P4GC 78.0.1.
I can see calendars and invitations, I can synchronise, I can also add new entries, but I cannot invite people. As soon as I click "Send and Close" all is gone. And it seems if I invite somebody using the google calendar interface, and I then try to do changes in Thunderbird, it all invitations. I tested it two times, it seems to be like this.

*** When trying to update the calendar ***

Obviously, a bug. However, thanks a lot for your great support, the plugin worked great over years and I use it everyday!

So as nothing seems to happen regarding the Google Provider problem, I gave TbSync a try, as many people mention it here. I removed Google Provider and used the Tools -> Synchronisation Settings (TbSync) to import my Google Calendar. And it works great into both directions:

TB 78.3.2 und TbSync 2.16.

In contrast to Google Provider, one drawback:
I can easily import all calendars in the section "My Calendars" (if I look to my original google calendar online), but
I cannot import "other calendars" where I have only limited rights. This worked with Google Provider very well.
As it happens, these calendars are not so important for me.

In addition, it seems that TbSync shows better performance, but the reason might be that Google Provider was throwing errors in the background already since a long time and I just did not notice it so far, until the bidirectional communication stopped working.

I went the same route to try TbSync - but I do rely heavily on other calendars that I have read only or limited rights to. As well, TbSync (from what I can tell) won't work with Google Tasks and I use tasks a lot. In addition, I have several Google accounts that I integrate all calendars together within Thunderbird/Lightening, one being a work GSuite account - but TbSync is not allowed by restrictions set into place by how our work GSuite it set up (not allowed due to data compliance and security restrictions, and don't thing the two factor auth would work via TbSync).

So - I'm stuck in a waiting period, hoping that Provider will be 'fixed' to work with the latest version(s) of TB....

Anyone know if there are efforts to resolve the issues?

Hi there, so I think, no good messages so far.
The developer of TbSync obviously got annoyed by complains about the Google integration (which is understandable), so he removed it. He is a great contributor to Thunderbird, I also use his Quicktext tool, so we should less complain and more praise people like John and Philipp ;-)
But you can get Google back running with TbSync.

by rdrazipam on Nov. 18, 2020 · permalink

Dear John, I'm sorry that some Google users have led you to stop supporting those services.
Thank you for creating TBSync, an extension that I find very useful in my migration to TB, and thank you for allowing me to synchronize my google accounts, by to your advice I created the property "extensions.dav4tbsync.googlesupport" and everything works very well.

I don't work with tasks, I usually put tasks in my calender, and you will argue that this is not so professional.

And I had to deactivate two factor auth and then allow the Thunderbird app to access my calendar. If both is forbidden by your organization, an option might be to forward the emails if the employer allows it - which is of course not really great.

Probably we have to convince the Provider for Google developer Philipp to fix the problem - which is obviously not his fault: Thunderbird developers changed something in the code.

So fingers crossed for us all!

Hi,

Some good news from this side.
I've been in the same situation (TB calender did not sync both or one of the directions, ...).
I've tried Tbsync and it worked.
Finally I returned to the "Provider for Google Calendar" tool and got the same issues again as when I left.

But now, since I updated TB to version 78.3.1 and now already using TB 78.4.3 for the first time in a couple of releases, TB calender works.
agenda events are synchronised bidirectional.
Make agenda event in Linux TB and get Google calendar updated correctly.
Make agenda event in Google calendar and get TB calendar updated correctly.
The same applies when deleting events.

regards,

PS: I'm running on:
        - Linux Mint 20.4
        - Update by downloading tar.bz2 file and unzipping it in /usr/lib
Zipped file contains directory Thunderbird overwriting tunderbird directory in /usr/lib

Hello,
I upgraded to Thunderbird 78.5 on Ubuntu 16.04 and problem persist. It's not about sync, which in case always worked.. problem is with event attendees.. when you dismiss the even notification, all attendees are automatically deleted and this is a very big problem, because they lose the event from their calendar (and also any relevant information such as the google meet link for the conference).
TbSync is not a reliable option, the developer dropped support for google accounts.
A temporary workaround is to put the calendar in read-only mode.. but in this way you have to manage the events from the web.
I hope they will fix soon..

You can get TbSync to work for google accounts by setting a flag in the Config Editor (Preferences) within Thunderbird

Set extensions.dav4tbsync.googlesupport to 'True' and you will then be able to use TbSync with google accounts again.

None the less, not the best option for us for various reasons already spoken of :)

The same problem in Thunderbird 78.6.0 and Google Calendar Provider 78.0.1.   As soon as event saved in Thunderbird or User dismiss reminders, all attendees deleted from event and event deleted from attendees calendars.
Any solution?
