Hello Postbox users.

As you may have noticed, the old version of the Provider for Google Calendar does not work since November 17th. This is because Google pulled the plug on the v1 API which versions 0.32 and such have been using.

The new version, 1.0.2, only works on applications using the Mozilla Platform version 24 and above. I may be wrong, but I believe Postbox 3 uses the Mozilla Platform version 7. As this is not an issue with the addon itself but with the platform version, I'd suggest asking the Postbox folks for support. There is a thread on the Postbox forums that offers a version 1.0, but I haven't checked what changes have been made and some users have reported it doesn't work. Backporting the Provider to the Mozilla Platform version 7 is likely a substantial amount of work.

I have contacted a few folks at Postbox and we will see how to move forward. In the meanwhile, please use their support forums for questions. If you are experiencing issues that happen just the same in Thunderbird, feel free to use this forum for questions.

Thanks Philipp for bringing Light into this. Unfortunately Postbox doesn't seem to address this issue - and there is no Support Forum either. Your link is to a Post from April 2014. Lightning 1.0 for Postbox stopped working as of yesterday. I already tried to contact Postbox via Bug Report and Feature Request. No response so far. As there is no other way to get in touch (to my knowledge) it would be very interested in their response to your approach. Thanks for your work! Keep on
best regards

Another quick update: I've checked the Provider that is for download on the Postbox forum. To make things more confusing, what they advertise as "version 1.0" is actually a repackaged variant of the Provider for Google Calendar 0.18pre. This explains why it stopped working on Monday.

We will have to wait for an outcome on your support requests an me contacting them.

Thanks Phillip, for sharing this information. Hopefully we'll have more answers soon from the Postbox developers. In the meantime I have not found a workaround since caldav doesn't seem to work properly with postbox's lightning...

Also having this issue - updated Lightning and the Provider plugins but no luck. Here's hoping Postbox rolls out an update :)

I'm currently using Provider in Thunderbird and still having issues. I upgraded to the 1.0.2 version but when I try to add a new Google calendar through my network it doesn't provide an option to insert my ICAL link. When I click next to choose from my list of calendars, the page is blank. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Provider and Llightning multiple times yesterday and today with no changes. My entire office uses this addon and we love it so much. Please let me know if there's another way to make my calendars pop up and I'll try it, if not I'll wait for the next version to be launched.
Thank you

I can still *see* my Google calendars with the Posbox calendar, I just can't add events - I get a modification error.  So, I have to go to my smart phone and add the events to my Google calendar which will then show in Postbox.  Not very convenient, and Postbox takes awhile to show an event, but it does work.  I will be very happy when this gets fixed!

Until Postbox is updated... I found a Chrome app that does this; called Sunrise. it works well to aggregate Gmail and Google Apps calendars. It also shows any secondary calendars that you've setup; such as birthdays, sports teams, Holidays.
it launches as a web app. Just pin the page to your desktop or taskbar.
You can find the app in the Google web store.

Paul, could you uninstall and reinstall the Provider addon? The error message suggests you have the old Provider version installed, but the URI suggests you are using the new one. Be sure you are installing the addon from the linked bug.

Well done Phil
There was an initial delay where Postbox went through a few "not responding" cycles - possibly as it was downloading info to Postbox calendar - which were fixed by closing and reopening Postbox and just being patient while numerous calendars (10) and reminders (hundreds) were loaded.  After I dismissed previously dismissed reminders (ie. dismissed before the Provider link was broken) the new Provider seems to be working fine without any bugs.

Congratulations to you Phillip and to Postbox for working with you to rectify this issue that was caused by our wonderful "friends" at Google - great team effort

cheers

GREAT JOB...
I installed it yesterday - and so far it's working well for me.
I did notice that I got the "not responding" during the install and initial synchronization - but it turns out it was downloading the calendar info - as well as generating the past three years (back to 2011) worth of my calendar notifications.

It took a few repeats of "Dismiss All" to eliminate all the pending notifications - but it was no big deal.
GREAT JOB...

Thank you !

I just posted the following to the Bugzilla bug for this issue:

Have been using the updated provider for several days now and has worked well.  My husband and I share a Google calendar on two laptops using Postbox as well as using the same Google calendar on our phones.  We use Postbox on Window 7 and are running 3.0.11.

Today I changed one instance of a recurring event to an alternate time.  I did this change from Postbox and it apparently completed the change as I can see the change on my Google calendar and on my phone - both the recurring events at the normal time and the recurring event at the modified time. However, all occurrence of the task - the recurring events and the alternate event time for on event have been deleted from my calendar.

I have reload the calendar, closed Postbox and reopened, turned on the debug logging and found no errors.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?  Let me know if you need more information.

I may have spoken too soon.
I have a recurring mtg - that I moved to 2 weeks following the regular day.

That shows up properly in the chrome calendar extension that I (some of us) was using for a work-around.

But in this Beta Postbox release - the original recurring mtg is showing at the "regular" day- and not on the revised day....not sure what happened..

Hi Phil
All going well apart from an odd change from previous version:  The Reminder pop up box still works as per the previous version but in the past I would manually dismiss each individual event reminder to make it go away after I had acted on the reminder .  What happens now is that each event reminder dissappears automatically on the day after the event which means I am no longer being reminded of events I have not completed. This was one of the great things about the previous version - reminders kept popping up until I manually dismissed them.  Can this be reinstated?
cheers

Installed the new code.  I had multiple calendars on Postbox and it gets locked up trying to bring up the login page for the 2nd of my 4 calendars.  Now, I can't uninstall the plugin and I can't use postbox because postbox hangs if I close the window.  How can I uninstall the plugin without running postbox?

Hi Zeke,

if you have v2 installed, please just be patient until all events have loaded. This can take a while, I've heard reports of at least 20-30 minutes with a large calendar. I'm still trying to find out why its blocking the UI. Once its done, the Provider will do an incremental sync, so only changes are transferred. It will be fast afterwards.

I recently upgraded to the latest version due to the changes google made. I had that issue where it processed ALL past events and I had it dismiss them all. Took a while, but eventually it got through them. Now it's sitting on 7 past reminders and it won't let me dismiss them. When dismissing them, I've tried both options (submit my changes anyways and discard my changes and reload) and they just won't go away. Any ideas on what I can do to make them go away?

Fwiw...I was having that problem before all off this started.
It's in a separate dialogue box. For each event. Same behavior as you're describing. I just click on the "x" in the upper right of the dialogue box. Forget about using the two buttons at the bottom of the dialogue box. That behavior had probably been there for a year now...it's irritating to say the least..but the x will at least get rid of the dialogue box.

If you click somewhere else inside the window, it should be enabled after a short moment. This is controlled by Google afaik.

Hi Dave and Phillip
I am having problems not being able to dismiss notifications and the solution you suggested, Dave, does not solve the problem. Curently this problem only seems to occur in the link between Google Calendar and Facebook Birthdays when the notifications appear in the Provider.  But it goes further than that - I have turned off the offending calendar in Postbox Calendar but the notifications keep appearing????  If I hover over the Calendar in Postbox it tells me that "Calendar for Facebook Birthdays is momentarily not available".  The "moment" has been going on for a week now.  I wonder if this is a problem with Facebook, Google or the Provider or a combination of all of them :-(

Very odd.

cheers
Roger

On this issue - I kep on trying and fixed the problem.  I deleted the Facebook calendar both in the Provider and in Google Calendar then reloaded into Google and updated the Provider and now all seems to be OK.  Sems that either Facebook or Google had changed or were not talking to to the Provider but now all seems OK.

Great to hear Roger. I'm a user just like you - Phillip is the developer (although I was a app dev programmer before I retired - it was with early internet tools-not the current generation.)
Great to hear it's working again for you Roger...

Subject: Re: Postbox users please read

I recently upgraded to the latest version due to the changes google made. I had that issue where it processed ALL past events and I had it dismiss them all. Took a while, but eventually it got through them. Now it's sitting on 7 past reminders and it won't let me dismiss them. When dismissing them, I've tried both options (submit my changes anyways and discard my changes and reload) and they just won't go away. Any ideas on what I can do to make them go away?

Thank you,
Adrian
