Hey. This year we have unprecedented attention from Make magazine and they want our content.

That's right anything you can throw at me we can get placed on their blog!

Send us your current build out videos! Show us a bit about your teams. Post this stuff asap.

I'll send out a blog post to Make on monday. I need videos by Sunday at midnight CST.

Make a teaser video for your team! Show us some of the build out!

Go Go Go.

Duct Tape & Zip Ties is running into a little difficulty ... there is this white plague that keeps returning (see picture attached) ... I can't remember any winter where we got snow so many times!  Enough already!!   We are finished with FIRST Robotics ... it is time to turn our attention to PPPRS!

Area 515 is also running into problems. Our first robotics isn't over yet. By the way, we are planning two cars. One for highschool students and one for the space.

Very cool!!   I was talking to a few local teams at the competition and might have a team interested in joining PPPRS ... need to finish up my homework for last week and then I will get the info together to send to them ... hoping Brian will build a car with a few of his friends (from Robotics team??) ... but he has to finance it ... thus the hesitation on his part.  ;-)

What a shame FIRST Robotics isn't over ... they are going to NATIONALS guys!!  Woot!

Fantastic stuff guys! I'm really glad everyone is keeping up to date on things!

And I'm super happy to know that DT&ZT is back to represent KC!

Sorry for the even worse than usual follow up to the season. Patrick and I are currently job hunting so it has hampered our time for getting the series done. Hopefully by May we'll have everything sorted out for the regular season!

Keep posting!

Area 515 here,

We have been hardly at work on the power wheels as time slips us by. We have brakes!!  And steering that probably sucks!

And some video!

We got the seat sub-frame roughed in and hope to have the seat fully mounted today followed by some crude battery boxes so we can do half power tests before the weekend is out!

Awesome!

(You might want to re-think your tires, go kart slicks are specifically prohibited in the rules)

We have another set of tires with tread that fit on those rims.

There isn't that much legroom on that car once we put all the plastic on.  We are pushing the dimensional limits to get that much room.

Seriously?

We were kinda figuring on cutting tread into them.

So now we need a minimum tread depth rule :-)

Things are just heating up here at Wedding Party headquarters. Not much to share yet, but thought I would post the CAD chassis design I have spent too much time working on. I have been using solvespace (a freeware CAD program) to do the hub and chassis design, and am quite impressed with it (considering that it is free and is so simple that I can run it on my $150 netbook).

Hey 515,

I would heavily test your hydraulic brakes once your car is together. Last season I used two bike brakes, one mechanical, one hydraulic. The hydraulic one cut out consistently a few laps into a race. The problem comes with all the tight curves in the course and having to brake very frequently. A brake specialist from i3 concluded that the liquid in the hydraulic brake was heating up quickly and causing the brake to fail. Though, your cables look a lot thicker than the ones I used. But just a heads up. I can't tell you how much it sucks to try to race with brakes.

We've had no problems with the single hydraulic brake on Jakenstein, but we drained and refilled it with new fluid.
If you are using scavenged brakes try a complete fluid swap, moisture is a killer in brake systems.

Lol!

Yeah, we have completely flushed our brakes. Though one is a bit spongier than the other, they stop us VERY well. We can lock them with ease. Or not lock them with control.

But honestly, I wouldn't mind if our brake oil got hot. I don't mind the smell of French fries. Did I mention our fluid is canola oil?

Junkyard Chevy Alternator
Scratch built inverter, and sensors. FPGA controller running on an eval platform for now. Field current is still from a power supply, as it needs a new PCB with better thermal design.

(Canola oil, really?)

Canola oil is cheap, non toxic, and non corrosive. Given that we pulled our brakes and handles from different vehicles we wanted to make sure that our fluid wouldn't eat away the seals in either cylinder. Also we don't have to worry as much about cleanliness. It works well. We have plenty of stopping power and can lock the brakes easily.
