Hi all,

The Raspberry Pi 5 is now available on pre-order from all suppliers for delivery in late October …

I’ve ordered mine, plus new case and power supply …

Cheers,

Al.

Thanks Al, I pre-ordered one this morning from SparkFun... Looks like a significant speed increase (2.4GHz) over the 4.

Shame the formfactor changed yet again (USB and ethernet ports), but the Pi 5 should fit my 7inch Display-H. The powerful 5 will have a decent effect on the speed of some retro-engines!

Looks like it requires RPiOS Bookworm - Buster isn't supported - which probably means the current images won't work. I'll have a look once Bookworm is released.

Yeah but I think then we really have to switch to 64 bit and forget about the DGTPI…

Dirk, does it mean that the PicoChess we're running today is 32bit? I wasn't aware, I thought it was all 64 bits already.

Yes - only a few users using PicoChessWeb solutions are using 64 bit..

In a DGTPI we have to use 32 bit because of the DGT3000 hardware at the moment.

The „standard“  images kindly provided by Randy are both 32 bit (I think I did not check for some time)…

Yes, they are both 32-bit to allow running in the DGTPi.

Hi all,

This guy on YouTube has already overclocked his RPi5 with the CPU at 3GHz and the GPU at 1 GHz, without any problems:

Haha Al, just watched it too. Temperature went up to 76 °C  degrees with active cooling.  The thermal throttle triggers at 82°C, so it's still manageable. Can't wait!

Other nice feature of the Pi 5 is that it has BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). So maybe it is possible to add the DGT Pegasus (and others?) to the list of supported eboards in Picochess in future.... :)

Hi Henri,

The Pi3b and Pi4b have BLE. I believe that's what Gerhard used for the ChessNut and ChessLink connections. Unless I'm mistaken.

What would happen, therefore, if in "config.txt" I set:

arm_64bit=1

instead of zero, as it today?

Would everything boot and work normally? (I have a Rpi-4B 4Gb enclosed into a 7 inches display as my PicoChessWeb machine - no DGTPi around).

Randy Reade

No. PicoChess would fail. It would be looking for an /opt/picochess/engines/aarch64 folder with the engines.ini, retro.ini and favorites.ini files in there.

The OS would boot but most programs are 32-bit (armhf). It would be best to use a 64-bit OS (not just the kernel) and re-compile the engines for 64-bit (although they will run as 32-bit as long as the architecture support is there - which it is in RPiOS64).

Fine.
Absolutely clear to stay away from messing with things like kernel, etc.
Thanks!!

Hi Randy,

A stupid question. What do I need to do in order NOT to boot in PicochessWeb automatically?

Hi Steve,

The web browser is started automatically using an entry in /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart which starts a kiosk.sh shell script located in the pi user's home folder. To prevent it from starting, edit the autostart file ('sudo nano /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart') and add a hash mark '#' before the '/home/pi/kiosk.sh' entry:

#/home/pi/kiosk.sh

Save the file (Ctrl-o, ENTER, Ctrl-x)

On next boot the web browser will not open automatically.

Hi Randy,

I have a tricky question for you…

I already have a Raspberry Pi 5 8G booting from official m.2 NVME hat running Raspbian, and I am using it as my main computer. Is there any way that I can install Picochess 3.3 myself?

Hi Scally,

cpu_freq=3000 is not steady for all Pi 5's!  It's safer to overclock it to 2800 or 2900 (PCB dependent). Mine 5 cannot run at 3GHz. However, gpu_freq=1000 is OK on my Pi 5 (is that safe for all?).

Steve

Hi Randy,

I tried the following configurations on my Chessnut Go and Air without any problem:

1. DGT Pi + Picochess V3.3
2. DGT Pi with Pi 3B+ upgrade + Pico 3.3
3. RPi 4B, 8G + Pico 3.3
4. RPi 5, 8G + Pico 3.3

Will try RPi5, 8G booting from m.2 nvme drive with your new Desktop image when I have time...

Hi Steve,

I have attached a modified version of the procedure I use when making an image from scratch. It should work for you and anyone else wanting to quickly get PicoChess up and running on a working desktop system.
