"file has vanished" - is this a serious warning during backup?

Every once in awhile the full backup command returns this rsync warning. Is this anything to worry about?

file has vanished: "/var/lib/postgresql/9.1/main/pg_subtrans/13D9"
rsync warning: some files vanished before they could be transferred (code 24) at main.c(1526) [generator=3.0.7]

This is perfectly fine. It means that some pages have been modified from the start of the backup. WAL files will include those changes.

Nothing to worry about! ;)

Hi guys,

I got this issue when backing up postgres DB by rsync too.

Could i exclude "pg_subtrans" directory from backup plan? will backup be valid if i create a new empty pg_subtrans directory?

Hi Stanley,

As Gabriele said in response to Colin's question, it' perfectly fine, and is nothing to worry about, if something changes in the pg_subtrans directory
during a backup procedure.

Excluding that folder from a backup plan will invalidate the backup.
I suggest you to read the PITR documentation
( http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.3/static/continuous-archiving.html ), that should solve all your doubts about
integrity of a backup and backup procedures
