He was s of Capt Sir Sir Walter Michael Hungerford POLLEN MC (1894-1968), scion of the Bts of that name, and Rosalind Frances (b 21 Sept 1899, died 2 Oct 1982 (reg Q3 Glos)) d of Robert Henry BENSON (1850-1929) of Walpole House, Chiswick, London, by his 1887 m (reg Q3 London) to Evelyn HOLFORD (1856-1943). He m 1958 (div 1972, remarried 1978) Patricia Helen (1932-2016) d of Lt-Col Gerald BARRY MC (1896-1977), scion of the Bts of that name, and Lady Margaret PLEYDELL-BOUVERIE (1903-2002) d of 6th Earl of RADNOR CIE CBE (1868-1930) and Julian Eleanor Adelaide BALFOUR (c1868-1946), scion of the Scots gentry family of that name of Balbirnie, and had a son and two daus. He also had, by Amanda WILLIS, a further son (Josh) and dau (Lally).

In 1958 he married Patricia Barry, who worked for the security services and was later a teacher in Harlem. They had three children: Susannah, who is an art adviser; Bella, an author; and Marcus, who runs a steelworks. They divorced in 1972 but remarried six years later, by which time he had two more children, Josh, a scientific cook, and Lally, a mature student, with Amanda Willis. “In the end he was smart enough to recognise that my mother equalled home, and he always came back,” wrote Bella. Patricia died in September 2016 and he is survived by his five children and 11 grandchildren....
