I'm doing an assignment of creating a db of a documentary footage collection using PBcaore as the standard I draw on. For each field I have to list the related/correct term for each Data element.  In the assignment this was a sample of how that would be answered or expressed….

Data element = PBCore: pbcoreCreator/creator

But most of my fields are physical/technical (like indicating BetaSP).

Would I fill in Data element =  instantiationGenerations or as formatPhysical as they do in this example? (below)

or in the case of physical would it be...this?

Data element PBCore: instantiationGenerations

as in <formatPhysical>Betacam SP</formatPhysical>

XML of BetaSP PBcore sample

http://v1.pbcore.org/PBCore/PBCore_SampleRecords/sample01.xml

My other question - I was told that  pbcoreDescriptionDocumentpbcoreInstantiationDocument are inside the pbcoreCollection container or "umbrella" (if you will) but nowhere in this XML example does the word Collection even appear so I'm confused.

Finally in a broad sense I understand pbcoreCreator is an example of a intellectual content attribute and instantiation if for physical/technical built I'm still not clear how to indicate (fill in) the Data element correctly.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Paul,

You would probably want to use formatPhysical as the data element to indicate the physical format.

PBCore Collection is an optional element — while it can be used to group a set of PBCore Description documents or Instantiation documents together in one record, if there's a use case for that, it's not required to use it. So, while PBCoreDescriptionDocuments or instantiationDocuments can be included within a Collection container, they can also stand alone. Since including them within a Collection container is optional, the example you linked doesn't use the container element.

I'm not quite sure what your question is regarding pbcoreCreator — could you clarify a little more what you're confused about?

Hope this helps!

Thanks that really helps!  In the sample supplied for the assignment it says…

Data element = PBCore: pbcoreCreator/creator for a filed in the db called Creator

to follow suit if the field name is Duration, the ideal way of pointing to the matching element name in PBcore would be….?

Data element = PBCore: instantiationDuration

There are nuances I still have to figure out for other fields but that is the essence of the question.

Best,

Paul
