Hi everyone.

I've been an enthusiastic user of OSMAND for a couple of years now. I've tried a number of navigation apps on my Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S4), and strongly prefer OSMAND. However, since the release of v2.4 I've been completely unable to record tracks. I've tried uninstalling the app then reinstalling a couple of times. I've tried installing it to an SD card; I've tried removing the SD card and installing it to the system memory, but nothing has worked. It's not as if I'm unfamiliar with the settings, as I've used OSMAND for long enough to feel very familiar with all the various settings. Interestingly, all the other functions work normally; it's simply the track record function which is defeating me. I'm now completely stumped! I've become sufficiently desperate to try Viewranger again, but I really don't like it! Has anyone else experienced similar problems, or got any good ideas as to how to solve my problem?
Many thanks in anticipation! Regards, Graham

I think, it would be a good idea to describe your problem, instead of lamenting about Osmand, praise your skills, an threaten to use a different app.
Nobody can tell you, that he has the same problem, if you do not tell him, what is yours.
And nobody can help you solving a problem, he does not know that you have it.

All I can tell you, is, that I have no problems recording tracks, which will not help you very much.

Regards
Manfred

Hi Manfred

Thanks for your reply, and for offering to help with my problem.
I'll try to explain exactly what I do when I use Osmand, but I'm not an expert; I only know how I've always used Osmand in the past, and it's always worked for me until the release of v2.7.

Here's what I do: I usually plan a route on Ride with GPS, which I find works very well for route planning, and is easy to use. I export the route I've just planned as a GPX file to the computer's desktop.

I then connect my phone (Galaxy S4) to my computer, and transfer the GPX file to Osmand. I do this by going to the SD card, then Android, then Data, then net.osmand.plus, then files. I can now see the route I've planned on Osmand on my phone. I clip my phone to my handlebars (I use a Quadlock mount; they're expensive, but really secure), so that I can follow the route using the map - I don't use the navigation function, I just follow the map.

Before I set off, I activate 'Location Services' on my phone, and wait a few seconds till I've got a good connection and am sure my location shown on the phone is accurate. I then press Osmand's GPX button and now see the window 'Log track to GPX file' - I prefer to decide the logging interval each time I ride, rather than always using, for example, 5 seconds. I check 'show on map', and click 'OK'. The GPX button is now red, and remains red whilst I take my ride, following the route on the map screen.

When I get home, I press the red GPX button, and on the pop-up window I select 'Save current GPX track'. The GPX button remains red until I press it again, and I then choose 'Stop GPX logging'.

I now connect my phone to my computer to download the GPX track, but this is where my problems start. Since v2.7 the GPX track appears to be recorded in my phone's internal storage. I find it in Android, data, net.osmand.plus, files, tracks, and then in a folder called 'rec'. (The other files in the tracks folder are GPX tracks of older routes I've uploaded to my phone; the folder 'rec' is in there with them.) There's what seems to be a GPX file in the rec folder, but it's a tiny file, only about 331bytes, and doesn't contain any information about my ride. I've looked for the GPX file of the route I've just followed, both on the phone, and on my computer, but I'm sure it's not stored anywhere else in Osmand.

As I said in my first note, I've tried several ways to try to solve the problem, and uninstalled/reinstalled Osmand about 3 times. I've also tried removing the SD card and installing Osmand directly to the phone's internal storage, but nothing I've tried enables me to successfully record a track.

So I hope that this is an adequate explanation of what I'm doing, and that you, or anyone else out there, are able to help.

Best regards, Graham

To stop and save:
first stop gpx logging,
THEN save this to a file.

Hi Peter

It's kind of you to make a suggestion, but unfortunately Osmand still doesn't record the track.

I took a short walk from my house with Osmand working on my phone, and did as you suggested. First I stopped GPX logging, then I pressed the GPX button again, and then selected 'save the current GPX track'.

Exactly as before, there's a GPX track in the 'rec' folder, but it's only 331 bytes, and doesn't contain any information. It's interesting that it's always 331 bytes.

Thanks anyway, Graham

Hi Graham!

You are doing the same as I do (besides first stopping, then saving)
When recording, the red GPX-button should blink (shrink a little) every five seconds.

The file is stored in the folder you described and has name like this:
2017-09-01_18-48_Fri.gpx
(Date_Time_DOW.gpx)

If its content looks like this:
######
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ?>
<gpx version="1.1" creator="OsmAnd~" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd">
  <trk>
    <trkseg>
      <trkpt>
      </trkpt>
    </trkseg>
  </trk>
</gpx>
######
no track points are generated.

Why?
Good question.
I have no answer.

Regards
Manfred
