Country or region files

I find it very useful that someone is creating UK maps in just 4 maps in addition to the regional ones.  Would it be possible to do the same for other European countries?  When I am touring I don't always know where I may end up (or indeed the names of each and every region), and loading all regions of The Netherlands, Germany, France and others (maps, wikis, hillshade etc) is quite a chore.  It would also mean I wouldn't have to have a 3rd party address file to cover the whole of each country.

Hi Tim,
yes, it's possible, though you'll have to create them by yourself, if nobody has already done that.

Macro-region files in .pbf format are currently available for several countries, i. e. for Italy 5 files are available (North-East, North-West, Center, South and Islands); the same should be for Germany and France, if I remember well: just check Geofabrik web pages: http://download.geofabrik.de/europe.html#.

Some local users may have already generated and shared the respective .obf files, unfortunately sometimes they don't advertise very much their work, so it could be quite hard to find them.

If you need macro-regions for Italy, for instance, you can ask Local OSM Community by posting here: http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/Italy-f5324173.html (official language is Italian but English is well understood by most of the users there, so you should have no problem with communication :-). Alternatively

Alternatively, you can download the full-country .pbf and create smaller regional files by building as "shape file" and using it to "crop" the full map. JOSM should be able to accomplish this task, but I've never done this, so I'm not sure.

Cheers,
Max - Italy

Thanks.

As I understand it I need to convert a pbf to an obf using OsmAndMapCreator.  I found the pbfs - that's fine.

Unfortunately I can't get OsmAndMapCreator.sh to work on ubuntu (having cloned it from github).  I first got "Error: Could not find or load main class net.osmand.swing.OsmExtractionUI" when I ran it from a terminal, and nothing if run from the GUI.  I've seen other reports of this issue but have been unable to understand them well enough to get a solution that works for me.

Are there any instructions anywhere apart from https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OsmAndMapCreator ?  I created a 'batch.xml' file as instructed, but when I ran the 'batch create' instructions I got "Error: Could not find or load main class net.osmand.data.index.IndexBatchCreator"

Have you any thoughts?

I think the problem is in the Java version you are using, try updating it to the latest version.

Or, maybe, there's some issue with OsmAndMapCreator, you actually get the latest nightly version from their site, so it's possible, sometimes, to download a non-working executable; retry in the next days and maybe you'll be more lucky...

I'm not at home now, but if you want I can send you a copy of the working version I'm using, once I'm back.

Btw, consider you'll need LOTS of free RAM ): cjrrently it takes about 8-10 Gigabytes to to generate a full map of Italy.

Regards,
Max

I'm on java version 8.101, which is the most recent I can get. I used git clone to get the current master version of OsmAndMapCreator.

I suspect it's some sort of set-up issue.  The instructions, including how to create a batch.xml file weren't very clear to me (I'm still not really sure if I need one).  If you have any further instructions on precisely what to do once downloaded I'd appreciate that, but I don't think it's a version issue (so no need to send me a version), since others seem to have had similar problems over the years.

Thanks

Tim

What seems to have happened is that I downloaded OsmAndTools, which includes OsmAndMapCreator, but is different from the stand-alone OsmAndMapCreator.  The link to the latter from the wiki didn't work earlier today, which is why I used git clone on OsmAndTools.  However, that link now does work, and having installed it it matches the instructions much better.  There is, for instance, a file call OsmAndMapCreator.jar, which wasn't there before (and puzzled me), and also batch.xml!

So I'm up and running now.  Thanks for your help

I usually download newer versions of OSMC from this link: http://download.osmand.net/latest-night-build/OsmAndMapCreator-main.zip
and, once I've realized it's working make sure to create a backup copy of the entire work folder, just to roll back in case a non-working version happens  in a moment where I'm in a hurry.

Happy you could solve your problem, anyway :-)

Thanks.  It turn s out that the latest version doesn't worm on my system, but the April 24th version does.

Larger files, such as Germany, can't be processed on my system, not least because they chew up vast amounts of disk space (60+ GB) at which point my SSD was full.  Ah well, I tried :)

Regards

Tim
