I'm been getting this message every time I try to use the routing feature.
I've tried everything from rebooting my Nexus 5x to forcing the app to stop, rebooting the phone, uninstalling/re-installing the app,
This has been happening for just a few days.

What version of osmand and what local map files are you using? Also, is the world basemap installed?

Hi Jack,
Thanks for thinking about my problem.
The version I'm running on my Nexus 5x is
OsmAnd+ 2.4.7,released:2016-09-19
Installed maps are all up to date
United States of America Massachusetts Sept 30,2016
World overview map June 13,2016

How do you clear route/routes? My screen is showing what appear to me to be multiple routes to different destinations.

Here's a link to a screen shot

Are you by chance trying to use a GPS track file to help calculate your route....?

The normal way to "clear" an on-screen Osmand-generated route is to press the blue navigation icon in the lower left (which is not present in your screenshot), then press the "X" to stop navigation.

In the interest of privacy, I won't ask what your real start and destination locations are, but can you try to have Osmand calculate a route between two places (e.g., pick a nearby store as the start, and somewhere else in town as the destination)?

Jack,
I removed osmand+ and downloaded osmand 2.4.7; I'll use it without any plug-ins until I regain confidence in the app. Maybe it was the + version with the paid subscription that was causing the problems. I liked the idea of frequently  updated data and being able to add data to OSM. Guess I'll stick with Vespucci and do serious editing when in the field and JOSM at home.
Thanks for thinking about the problem I was having.
