Dear all,

What's the best approach for creating a box wing in OpenVSP?

Should I make the leading wing, verticals and trailing wing with one wing element and three sections, using dihedral to flip the sections up and over?

Or should I use three separate wing sections?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Graham

It somewhat depends on what kind of analysis you want to do.

I would probably use one wing -- make sure to turn on 'rotate foils to match dihedral' and then build up the wing with three sections (bottom, vertical, top).

If I wanted blended corners, then five sections -- an additional section for each corner.

If you want to parametric studies, I would then use parameter linking to tie the top spand to the bottom span -- keeping in mind if the verticals are not at 90 deg, etc.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for that. It was how I started, then I thought it would be
prudent to ask. :)

I used rotate wings to match dihedral, and inverted the 3rd/rear/upper section.

One thing I did notice was that in VSPAERO the pressures were
displayed on the upper surface, as expected, but this ended up being
the lower surface for the rear wing.

Thanks and merry Christmas.
