Hi all,

I can't remember where I placed the last version I uploaded.

Please find attached a JSON file containing all TIPLOC locations and details about them. The tiplocs are mapped to track level and when exporting it takes an average location to produce a single item. I've also mapped bus stations, ferry terminals and the ones in Europe.

This is up-to-date as of the 10th July 2021.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hello

Which license the data is released under?  Are there any restrictions on re-use, and does it contain any data derived from non-open sources, e.g. Ordnance Survey data?

Hi Peter,

Good questions, also important!

The source data is from the TPS model that's released every night combined with items from BPlan and the nightly CIF feeds. I've spent many months/years tagging the tiplocs to the correct locations and attach it to the track (OS/NR data). It was crossed referenced with sources such as NESA but nothing private. I also plan to add tiploc mileages as well.

I can't share the track level detail as it wouldn't make sense without the track layout - which I can't share due to OS licensing restrictions.

In regards to licensing, I'm considering it as open and for people to use freely for whatever purpose.

Hope that answers your questions :)

Regards,
Liam Crozier

To add, if a license needs to be specified then it would be the same of the wiki pages, Creative Commons sharealike.

I don't mind writing the whole process in detail if required for a wiki page or just curiosity. I plan to release these every month and have an open API to get the latest version on demand.

Is the track layout data based on OS "open data" but processed in a way that you'd be able (and willing!) to share, so that we could generate it ourselves given the right OS data source?

Best wishes,

Martin

Hi Martin,

No, the track data comes from a FOI request via Network Rail, which ~24% is from OS Imagery and the other 76% comes from Network Rail (surveys, etc). WhatDoTheyKnow website does have the shape files on it but there's license restrictions if you choose to use it.

You could get the OS open data and automatically attach the tiploc to the nearest track. If I remember correctly, the open source one from OS has tracks missing when underground. Been a while since I've used it.

Thank you for this excellent data set.

The CRS for Bow Street is BOW - but it's showing as null in your file. Is this an issue with some source data somewhere?

Hey, thank you!

There's "BOWSTRT" which has CRS of "BOW" and then there's a former BORTBOW which is in BPlan but not TPS,

Hope that helps.

BORTBOW was an error. Someone accidentally created the TIPLOC as a subsidiary of Borth, rather than as a station in its own right. BOWSTRT is the one to use.
