We're looking for new housemates to join our collective house in North Park Slope for May 1.

We're all about creating a community with shared values of communication, responsibility and respect, creativity, collective labor and collaboration, direct democracy, social and political consciousness, resilience, safer space, playfulness, and inclusion.

Logistically, this means we share tasks like cooking, grocery shopping and cleaning. Our rotating cooking schedule means there’s vegetarian dinner five nights a week, and we eat together during house meeting once a week.We think of our space as an asset to share with the wider community, and to this end, we host social events and gatherings including workshops, potlucks and the occasional choir practice.

We strive to create a community that embraces a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, recognizes that being a human is complicated, examines how power and privilege intersect and challenges oppression (including but not limited to: racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, transphobia, classism, ageism, ableism). We recognize and grapple with the ways that access to housing, especially an expensive room in a Park Slope apartment, reinforces class-based marginalization.

About the house:

We live in the top three floors of a beautiful brownstone in Park Slope on St. Johns Place between 7th and 8th Avenues, less than 5 minutes from the Grand Army Plaza 2/3 stop and 7th Ave B/Q stop. We have a dishwasher and a washer/dryer in our house. There are 6 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms plus one random shower/sink in the living room. There is a fully furnished kitchen, dining room, and living room- totaling over 1,000 square feet of common space. We are minutes from Prospect Park, Brooklyn Central Library, the Park Slope Food Coop, Grand Army greenmarket (Saturdays), and dozens of great restaurants and cafes.

About the rooms:

The first room available is 12x20 with bay windows, a closet, a private sink, & built in dresser. Suitable for couples. $1408/month for rent. The room is available on May 1.

The second room available is 10x19 with 1 window, 1 skylight, and a closet. A slanted roof makes it difficult to stand in about 1/5 of the room (see pictures), though placement of the couch and bed still make this space usable. Its exact state is negotiable, it can come with a bed, couch, and perhaps some other furniture. Rent is $1094/month. The room is available on May 1.

Heat, water, & gas included; electricity is additional and split between us. We spend about $30/week per person for food, covering the 5 shared dinners and some lunches.

About us:

We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and especially encourage people of color and all gender identities to apply. Currently, most of us are queer and our house is made up of white and Asian folks.

S: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) nerd by day, diver & gymnast by night. Soup fiend. Curator of obscure and delightful animal facts.

K: Roots in Florida, pieces of heart scattered across the globe. Multimedia communications nerd at a gender and development organization and has lots of feelings about it. Wants to dance with everybody at the party as long as it's consensual.

G: A California native who moved to the city to pursue dreams of Broadway/comedy/tv/film. Enjoys cooking (especially baking), crafty beers, accents and languages, trivia and karaoke, and being silly with friends deep into the night.

C: Alaskan midwife who spends her time catching babies, studying human anatomy, and getting lost in the park. Current missions: scoping the city for a community garden to grow veggies; investigating the route of her next bike adventure.

E: Alaskan traveler who is in the city for a writing program, and also to consume as much poutine as possible. Discreetly ogles dogs in Prospect Park, but so far hasn't stolen one. Optimistic about one day completing a muscle-up.

About you:

You are passionate about whatever it is you do and invested in building a community. You value open communication, patience, compromise and consensus. You want to hang out with your housemates and have a good sense of humor. You are respectful and considerate. You are excited about participating in the house- whether that is weekly house meetings, workshops, adventures or the regular cooking, shopping and cleaning rotations.

If you're interested in joining our house, please fill out this form and we will get in touch with you! You can contact us at parkslopecollective [at] gmail.com with any other questions.

Thanks!

David

Hi David -

Are you still looking for members of your house? I think I would be a great match for your place. I am a 28 year-old queer male, non-smoking, I work as an educator, teaching culinary arts, gardening, and sound art to young people in different parts of the city. I want to live in this area because I am starting an MFA in Sonic Arts at Brooklyn College in the Fall and this area has perfect access to both of my campus locations and studio space. My schedule will not be 9-5, but I will be active during the week as well. I am committed to many of the same ideals you have expressed here and am looking to live with people who will provide a comfortable place to have important conversations.

I am a very domestic person and enjoy maintaining my home space. I wash my dishes when I use them, take the trash out when it is full, and gladly participate in regular cleaning of bathrooms, common spaces etc. I like cooking and sharing food and am coming from managing a 7-person living space so I am well versed in effective communal living. If you are interested, I would love to find out if your are still looking.

Thanks,
Matthew
