advice on a newcomer, how's the market for nodejs devs? Is it a good field to find remote type jobs/contract?

Hi,

I am looking for some advice from you guys, how's the market right now for nodejs developers?

Any inspirational stories where someone jumped in and was able to break into the freelance market?

I'm into Rails, Java (yes java!) and I have watched a few vids on nodejs and I really like the concept so far.

Is it a tough market to crack b/c you have to be a master of javascript both front end and backend?  I'm not the greatest at frontend type work, I mean I know javascript/jquery but I wouldn't call myself a master who can hackup a single-page gmail type app with ease :)

I'm from Java & RoR too. No you don't need Front End experience (although I had it).

+ There are more opportunities for remote jobs.
- Usually companies that use Node.js are small or small departments in big companies, and it's harder to get h1b visas than with let's say Java because of the small size they can't afford it, especially long waiting time for approval.

So, for remote and interesting work - definitely RoR & Node.js
For more reliable and relocation - good old boring Java would be better choice.

Here's a few companies using node.js:

Yahoo, PayPal, Ebay, Walmart, LinkedIn, Uber, Microsoft, and the New York Times. Many of them don't have small departments using node but big parts of the organization using it while other parts migrate to it.

Every one of them has a hard time finding talent.

I don't know... :/

From what I've seen, everyone I've come across looking for Node.js devs assumes that they come from front end and somehow stumbled onto the server side. If you only do server side things, I haven't seen any employer really "get it" that you can do only server side Javascript. Especially in the more "experienced" positions on the server-side, it's even more rare from what I can tell.

Good luck

same here. most job offers i've seen were "node included" not "node only". i'm also a backend guy, and i think i have to get my css knowledge uptodate to get something new with node. but it's not impossible.

I am doing freelance work, so here's that perspective: you CAN actually find Node.js backend jobs. Rebuild APIs, create MongoDB/Node.js backends for mobile devices, things like that.

Of course, most will expect you to do a bit of a frontend, but most of Rails jobs will, too (from what I've seen), so you'll have to get on the train eventually. Small companies and small teams will mostly look for a mixed front/backend work though, yes.

Thanks for the perspectives.

I'm fine with front end, but what I mean is I don't slice photoshop psds and take psds => html/css.  I can work in the environment, but not into doing it from scratch like a pure designer/html coder would do.

For what is worth, I never did the slicing and I'm working as a Node.js dev at least partially for the last year or so.

Where are more remote opportunities: Java, Android, Nosde.js, or RoR?

Thanks

Hi,

Well these days there are big companies building big projects using NodeJS. And we also totally agree with Mikeal's comment above that the companies are having hard time finding talent as this is what we feel exactly too.

If we just consider our case, we have developed some large applications using NodeJS and we are happy with the results which encourages us to invest more and the case should be the same for other companies too.

We are amongst the companies which are in hunt of talent, if you are interested then let us know, we are based out of Noida, India.

Regards

I'm talking mostly about the French economics here, but my feeling is that it's more or less the same throughout Europe (technological delay with the USA)

Node.js jobs are starting to open in big cities (like Paris) but are more often than not start-ups or small companies building backends for mobile apps. Node is slowly coming inside big companies, mostly in the media industry (TV, On-Demand, etc.) but oddly enough, not for streaming purposes. Node.js dev positions are still rare as employee but it is possible to find some node.js work as freelance. However I wouldn't recommend betting only on Node.js to find freelance work.
