what would you drive these ETL GR10G with?

I know the tubes have different gas mixture.  I love the see all the way through all around aspect to the ETL GR10G tubes and since they came with the rare sockets I'm pretty psyched.

These need a higher Anode voltage (minimum 220V in some datasheets and 250V in some) to work properly and also cathode resistors on cathodes "1" and "7" to get correct current as the digits are not size corrected to get equal current compared to the other cathodes - you will destroy the cathodes faster otherwise.

They are somewhat sensitive to shaking as the welds sometines come loose due to the heavy ceramic piece affecting the welds on the underside if it is shaken violently.

I used discrete transistors, MPSA42 and CMOS CD4028 plus some resistors.

Thanks Martin.  I knew something was very different about these tubes.  I had bought one a long time ago and when I hooked it up to 170V it seemed like the tube was bad at the time which was upsetting.  Luckily I kept it!  It wasn't until I learned more about them that I realized I wasn't handling them correctly.  The datasheet I'm looking at suggests DC 250V with 10k on the anode plus 8.2k on the 1 cathode and 4.7k on the 7 cathode.

Best Regards,

Bill

That's the correct values. However they seem to work a little bit better on 300V anode voltage with 18k anode resistor, possibly due to their aging. They also need some time to "wake up" when they have been stored for long, as with other gas filled tubes after long storage.

Excellent advice Martin!  I knew someone here would have some real experience with these.

I just wish there was a simple and cheap way of refilling these GR10G with a gas mixture that would make them long-life Nixies.

I absolutely agree Martin!  They're so amazingly beautiful tubes and so unique in their appearance with the views from any angle.  Dalibor says he'd like to make some smaller tubes... I've heard someone got some special rz568M tubes he made without the solid background behind the cathodes.  I haven't seen them yet but was told some were made at the factory as special order of some kind.  I'd actually buy some with perforated back instead similar to the perforated anode screen.

You got it Nick!!!  So great to see them!  I knew they existed but just hadn't seen them so neat those are!  When is the dekatron clock coming btw?  No rush but can't wait to see one and having a couple 😁. You've got some really nice stuff.  I've always appreciated some of the clocks you've put together.  I too really appreciate unique and harder to find or rare things.  Our group has a lot of us I think!

Best Regards,

Bill

Thanks Bill. I'm fortunate to have gotten the nixie bug many moons ago. The dekatron clock is almost complete.....:)

Somehow I should have known it was either you or Nick that had these tubes Paul.  I know you've created one of the neatest single tube clock designs ever Paul!  I love what you've done to display each individual tube.  Really great stuff.  Your design evolved into flexible system.  I'm really in awe of some of what you and Nick and Grahame are all doing and have done!  Thanks for the great display technology often reimagined.

Well, I do have one, but then you have several GR10G, and I've only got one!

Good Morning Terry!

I paid around 100$ each for two of them with the weird B26A sockets included.  Considering how much the B-7971's are these days I thought that was a steal in some ways and didn't hesitate to pull the trigger.  I now have 3 of these and a Hivac GR10J "Nimicator" with the copper colored anode.  The one in the family I'm still missing is the GR10J/F with red coating.  It's been elusive.

Got some partners to go with the other new tubes!

Really surprised I scored both of these tube types within days of each other from two different sellers!
I love the gold anodes!

Sometimes it looks gold to me even though some people say copper!  Big bonus I got another socket too!

Those are GR10J. They aren’t finicky like the GR10G.
