How do you add a New Task in the Outline tab in v 4.1.0?

I am struggling in version 4.1.0 with the seemingly simple action of adding a New Task to the Outline tab (after years of using verion 3).  Here is what MLO Help says, but it does not work:

 

To add a task:

1.	On the Task menu, click New task, and type a task name.

 

In the Outline tab, I successfully create a new row and type in the new task name.  But whatever I do next the row disappears from the screen.  I try to affix a date or I try to attach the Category, and the row disappears.  After years and years of adding new tasks in verion 3, I cannot add them in verion 4.

 

The only work around I have found is to Search for the disappeared new task name.  When it appears in the search list, I click on it and an All Tasks tab suddenly appears (between the Outline and To Do tabs).  I click on the new task name in the All Task tab list, then affix a date and category to it.  I close the All Tasks tab and then I can find the New Task name in the Outline and To Do tabs.

 

Certainly this is not the new way to add a new task in new version 4 Professional Edition.  I am paid and registered user, by the way.

 I believe there are some filters applied to the view and that  is the reason why your new tasks are not shown. Please check if 'all tasks' filter is selected.

Hi, Stro.

Could you check what view you are currently displaying in your Outline tab? (in case you don’t know, you determine this by looking at the list of views in the left-hand panel and looking for one whose name is in bold red characters).

 

The behavior you are seeing is what happens when you create a new task while you are in a filtered view, and the task does not pass the filters so it’s dropped from the display. This can be very frustrating if the task _will_ qualify when you are done entering it, for example if you have a view that’s filtered by context and your new task is going to have the “right” context but it’s dropped before you can assign its context.

 

Many people deal with this by doing most of their task entry in a view that isn’t filtered, such as _All_Tasks_. But it sounds as though you have a filtered view in your Outline tab that requires a context or requires a date.

 

Sometimes we get views in a tab that don’t really belong there. If that’s what happened to you, I would recommend bringing the All Tasks view back to your outline tab (while in the Outline tab, find “all tasks” in the list on the left and click on it) and then locking it so it doesn’t change again (after you get All Tasks displayed, right-click on the Outline tab and check “set as default for this tab” then right click again and check “lock default in this tab”)

 

If you really want to have a filtered view for the Outline tab, I would recommend making a new tab (click on the [+] icon after the tabs) making it the first tab (click the new tab and drag it all the way to the left) and then set it to All Tasks and lock it as above. Then use this tab for entering new tasks. The step of dragging a tab, by the way, will not work if you have already locked other tabs, you might need to temporarily unlock them.

 

FYI the reason I suggest making the new tab come first, is that there are some interesting things you can do with synchronizing selection and zoom among tabs, The synchronization works through the first tab, and if the first tab’s display is missing some tasks the results of the synchronization might not be what you expected. So it’s good to have an All Tasks display in your first tab.

I would be in favor of having the install process provide new users with a locked outline tab and an unlocked to-do tab. What sore of warning are you thinking of, Lisa?

I was thinking along the lines of, "The Outline workspace has been locked to the Outline view. To understand more about locking workspaces, see..."

But whatever is done should be consistent. Right now a new file comes up with "Workspace" and not these two tabs. The templates have the two workspaces, but neither is locked. So you can easily click on "Inbox" and your "Outline" tab will still be called Outline, but it isn't the Outline anymore of course.

Maybe filters need to be more visible? Perhaps the current filter could be added after the workspace name? 

In any case, I really think it would be better if selected tasks (or at least new ones) were not instantly removed if they are changed. So there is time to update them to be included in the filter. It would work much better if an added task is not removed until the user has moved the selection off of it. I would suggest the same should be true when editing a task (if selected it doesn’t disappear until you select a different task. A different color/formatting could be used to show the selected task does match the filter (and will be removed once you change the selection).

I still see the same behavior in 4.1.1RC1. Create a view filters for a specific context. Create a new task, type its text, hit enter - the task disappears because it doesn't have that context.

I am struggling to remember what changes were made to solve this problem - which I think remains a significant issue for new comers (and indeed for established users)   there have been suggestions that new/amended  items should remain on view in a filtered view where they no longer match the filter criteria with perhaps a special tick box or something that allows them to be dismissed

My workaround in some views is to also include tasks that I have not assigned a context yet, but that doesn't work in cases where a parent has a context because the context sometimes inherited (depending on how the new task was added).  And, unfortunately, there isn't a way to turn that off yet.

Another though would be to create an advanced rule based on creation date < 10 minutes, but it seems datetime functions only work at the day level (unlike the built-in filtering for completion time).

Unfortunately my workaround doesn't always work due to the automatic context inheritance (which I really don't like).

I do have another workaround that seems to be working better. Instead of creating a new task, I create a new sub-task. The new subtask will inherit its parent tasks contexts so it will usually match the filter. You can then edit it and un-subtask it.

Really I think the right solutions are to leave new tasks around until selection changes (and to get be able to turn off context inheritance).
