You must
port- forward if you don't want to buy a server.
OR, you can use a
networking tool (like
Hamachi) to connect up to 5 people.
OR, you can use "
CraftBukkit", which is a
complete replacement of the server..
To port- forward (can make a server that can have a player count of more than 5 people):
2. Place it in a new folder.
3. Click on it. It will generate server properties. After it has finished loading, type into its command prompt bar "stop". This will save the server's chunks and whatnot data.
4. Go back to you server folder. Right click on "server". Select "Open with Notepad".
5. Find "server-ip=".
6. Open up Command Prompt (cmd.exe) (you can do this by clicking the "Start" menu {taskbar} and typing "cmd" and pressing "Enter"). Type "ipconfig" (you must be an administrator to do this). Scroll down. You will see a "IPv4 address". Copy that down somewhere (because you cannot copy and paste in Command Prompt), then type that address in beside the "server-ip=".
7. If the server properties doesn't already have this, type in beside the "server-port=" 25565. That will make your server- hosting port the default Minecraft port.
8. Now you need to know what your
external IP address is. An easy and effective way to do this is to go to "
http://www.whatismyip.com/". This address will be the address your friends will need to access your server.
9. Now, you can access your server by clicking the "minecraft_server.1.7.2" again. This will start up your server once again.
10. Tell your friends to connect to the IP address that you saw on WhatIsMyIP.com and that's about it!
Enjoy! P.S. you can access your own server by connecting to "localhost". This will only work on the same computer that is hosting the server.
