Coex3d filament for 3D printing

Chris Osborn from Coex3d in Appleton made a very informative presentation at the last 3D printing meetup at the Makerspace.  He went into physical properties of the materials and the processing involved and how that affects printability.  He also very generously left samples of ABS and PLA filaments- all 1.75mm- to print with.

One of the interesting bits of new info was that PLA is extremely hydrophilic and will absorb moisture from the air all the way to the core of the filament.  This will affect print quality so he recommended storing filament in a bag with desiccant when not in use.  ABS is also hydrophilic but the moisture will only cling to the surface and does not get deep into the filament, so moisture is less of a problem when printing ABS.  I have placed all the PLA samples and some ABS in the dry box under MegaMax for storage- feel free to use the stuff but put it back in the box when you're done.

Another bit of interesting info is that Coex3d produces highly amorphous filament that flows easily from the extruder.  Some filaments (including Octave) are more crystalline which results in more back pressure on the motor in the extruder.  You can tell the difference between some of the Octave ABS and the Coex3d ABS if you bend a piece back and forth until it breaks.  The Octave material will break after just a couple cycles while the Coex3d material will require many cycles to break.

I have printed with some of the Coex3d ABS filament and it is great!  The surface finish after printing is shiny and smooth- maybe even better than Octave's stuff.  It also sticks to the kapton tape on the print bed very tightly.  I took a look at Coex3d's web site today and discovered that their filament is also very reasonably priced-  sale price on 1kg of 1.75mm ABS is $23 compared to Octave at $33/kg from amazon.com.

Not only that, but Coex is coming out with some new materials - CoPET and CX-Glass (the CX-Glass sounds really impressive and should provide some mechanical properties beyond ABS).  Even better, they'll be trying out some other resins suitable for feeding Stratasys machines!  Yay!

I was just going to say the same thing, I'm happy to support a Wisconsin business. But I put 3 spools in my cart and it says 29.82 for shipping! That can't be right.

That's good to know. I shipped a 11 lb bread maker from here to my mom in new mexico for $12. So I really can't understand how 6 lbs of filament within the same state from a business account would cost $30.

Coex's shipping should be fixed now.  Chris says:

I teach in Kaukauna, right next door to Appleton and would like to see if I could
just pick up product instead of having it shipped.  I have tried to use their Contact
page several times... and have been waiting for over a week for a reply and nothing....

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

As a school, we go thru a LOT of PLA in a year... and this would be great for us...
And yeah... would love to support a local business in the process!

Yeah, I've been getting all of my filament through them, after the first few weeks everything has been in stock, it's good quality and it's actually less expensive. If you can pick it up in person that would be even better.

I know this is not helpful but I think have blue already answered the question. I have been using their filament at the space and it has all been fantastic. I just got my first personal order of it yesterday and I really have to say the only thing I am disapointed in was my ability to look things over. I ordered a spool of "True Blue" and apparently that comes in 0.45kg rolls instead of 1kg rolls. I would like to know why the blue filament, and the one or two other filaments that come in that size for just about the same price as the 1kg rolls, is so much more expensive by weight than the other colors though.

I'm not sure what's up with the half-kilo spools either - the .45kg spools of purple MG94 are $25, and the 1kg spools of purple MG94 are $27, so it's not based on color.  I'll have to ask Chris what's up with that.

A degree in marketing.

MG94 is a methyl methacrylate ABS and has better mechanical properties
than the regular ABS that Stratasys has previously used as their
baseline material.
