Friends -

I thought this topic would have been discussed in the past but couldnt able to search it (may be need to improve my search skills).

I use MSM Quotes to import the current prices from Yahoo for my stocks, mutual funds. I like how smoothly it does the job. However, today i tried importing prices for crypto and see that due to category (this being crypto currency and not stock), MSM quotes couldnt able to import it into microsoft money.

Is there a way around for this?

Thanks

I would think the intersection of those using MSM and those buying crypto currency is rather small.
In Microsoft Money, how do you set the investment type-- Other?

MSMoneyQuotes does not get its quote data from Yahoo; it uses MSN Money. What symbol are you wanting to use? BTC?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/cryptocurrencies?id=c2111   shows the price for bitcoin. What URL there gets you the price you are looking for?

Are you using msmquote (the Java Money quote updater) to update your quotes? If this is the case then, yes, as you've discovered it currently doesn't support quotes with a type of CRYPTOCURRENCY. However adding the capability to update these should be fairly straightforward - I'll take a look at this and all being well it will be included in the next release scheduled for early February.

Thanks Cal, Jonathan

i use msmquote (the Java Money quote updater). I tried creating a new Investment "Bitcoin" as type - "stock" and then "others". Both of them didnt work as i guess Yahoo treat them as CRYPTOCURRENCY and MS Money imports only Stock/MF/Currency quotes data.

Do you use Pocketsense by any chance? It also has an option to pull quotes. If you treat your crypto as a stock within Money it will pull quotes with no issue. I know that is not what you asked, but it could be a workaround?

Thanks for your response. For some reason python was giving error on my system hence I switched to MS Quotes.

I'm currently testing support for cryptocurrency quotes in msmquote. This is working as expected, so should be included in the next release due early February.

Version 4.8.0 of msmquote is now available for download from GitHub. This release adds support for cryptocurrency quote types.

Thanks Jonathan. This is working perfectly fine. One Question: Is there a way around to import the quotes if the symbol is of 9+ alphabets.

thanks much again!

Hi, can you let me know the symbol you wish to use? Thanks.

Quotes like ' HOMESFY-SM.NS", " TRUMP-OFFICIAL-USD", " PRECISION-ST.NS"...MS Money wont allow me to enter these symbols competely because of # of alphabets constraint.

Thanks much!

Yes it is possible with the following steps:
  1. Add the cryptocurrency as normal to Money and enter the symbol to the maximum length allowed (12 characters), for example TRUMP-OFFICIAL-USD as TRUMP-OFFICI
  2. If the base currency of the Money file is not USD then remove the Money exchange prefix using the instructions here
  3. Run msmquote with a user-supplied Yahoo Finance API URL with the full symbol, in this example: bin\java -jar msmquote-4.8.0.jar moneyfile.mny password https://query2.finance.yahoo.com/v7/finance/quote?symbols=TRUMP-OFFICIAL-USD
msmquote will retrieve the quote for TRUMP-OFFICIAL-USD from Yahoo Finance, truncate the symbol to 12 characters and then look up and update TRUMP-OFFICI in the Money file.

Thanks Jonathan. I couldnt quite followed the step #2 however manually running the query as you explained in step #1 & #3 for both India and US quotes worked like a charm.

Awesome work done here and many thanks.
