Hey guys, I have the following problem:

I need to run Maxent for fish. I have subcatchments (derived from a DEM) and I have environmental variables (like precipitation) averaged or summed up in this subcatchments.
The species occurrence data within this subcatchments are of course on the river.

When I try to run the model it always says:
"sample at .... is outside the bounding box of environmental data, skipping." And this is true for every single sample.

Any suggestions how to fix that??

THANK YOU!!!!

Heiko,

Not clear exactly what the issue is, but if you input rasters that have values in the subcatchments and NA everywhere else, and the occurrence points are within the subcatchments, I can't imagine why you'd get this error. Can you explain in more detail the input rasters?

Hi Jamie, thanks for your reply!

So, all the occurence points are in the subcatchments, that I am sure. But I am not so sure if there are NAs everywhere outside the subcatchment. I dont really get how to deal with NAs (see also my newest question). Maybe this is related even.
Do I have to change the rasters somehow?

Thank you,
Heiko

Hi Heiko,

You probably have another geographic projection or you do not have same number of rows/columns on your coordinates and variables data. Look to the archive ;)

And one more thing: in GIS you can see them as same, but most GIS software do "reprojection on the fly" - they show different projections as one, same. But in files which MaxEnt use, you probably have different projections written,.

@ Jacek: I think you are absolutley right!! I did not realize that and probably because of this "on the fly transformation" everything seemed fine.
But now I checked: My occurrence data is in ETRS_89 and my layers are in GCS_Bessel_1981.

If I first load my occurrence data and then one of my layers, ArcGIS tells me its a different coordinate system. If I then choose ETRS_89, it still loads it with the old Bessel and nothing changes.
I also tried the "project" tool and I am guessing I have to enter something into the optional "Geographic Transformation" field.
Do you know how to ?

Thank you!!!

Hi,

Here you have the list of possible transformations between projection systems. Look for what you need and choose the most appropriated.

It is always easy to project vectors than rasters. So, try to project your points to the projection system of the raster.

Best,

Neftalí

Heiko,

Glad you found the problem. When changing the projection in ArcGIS, make sure your raster has a definex projection first. This should be its native projection. If it doesn’t have one, use the Define Projection tool. Once it has a defined projection, you can use Project Raster.

¡¡¡¡GRACIAS!!!!
