What material is the 'x' in the Mathjax logo made of?

Sorry, it's a bit off-topic. But I'm very curious and couldn't find any answers. It reminded me of ferrofluid.

I was not involved in generating the original logo image, and I think a third-party professional graphics team was hired for that.  The "x" is meant to be a "Jack" from the children's game of jacks.  The markings are meant to be reflections off of metal, like the one in the lower right of this image.
