Hi Guys,

To all you "Diesel Heads" out there, I have just got my first diesel after having two Disco V8's.

What is the best form of Tune-up for a diesel?
1) Having the tune-up done by the Agent?
2) Having the tune-up by a trusted LR service company? (Landyworx, Solihul, British 4x4 etc.)
3) Having a Dyno Tune-up? (Steve's auto clinic etc.)

Regards
Ken

Ken, it all depends what you want to achieve. I personally would not do any tuning (chipping/piggy back computers etc) of the Disco 3. I would only do decat, remove the EGRs and fit a bigger intercooler.

I use Landyworx for my D3 and have used Solihul for my Defender in the past.

I wouldn't go near an agent and if you're in Johannesburg go to Landyworx (Peter Street) and in Pretoria go to LRXtreme.  I also would keep away from Steve's.

Thanks for that Bruce,

As I have just got my D3 TDV6 and have not had any experience with a diesel before, I have already experienced the far better fuel consumption against what I had on my previous vehicle (Nissan Pathfinder V6 petrol) 21/22 lt 100kms around town against the D3 TDV6 11.2 km lt/100kms.
Hopefully as I learn to drive the TDV6 this will improve even more.
I got the Disco at 176,000 kms with full Agent service history and the next service due at 180,000 kms, I was looking ahead just in case. I've heard very good reports about Landyworx (Peter Street) I'm not sure what you mean about "Decat, remove the EGR's and a bigger intercooler?" Will this improve the fuel consumption as I'm happy with the performance so far.

Ken,
- the decat is basically removing the catalytic convertor from the exhaust system which can restrict the exhaust gases when it is old and clogged. When they get too clogged/blocked they can damage your turbo.
- You can remove the EGR (exhaust gas re-circulation) valve which can give problems like sticking open etc when they are old. It will also improve your performance but as for consumption some say it will, Im not sure it will.
- The intercooler is used to cool the intake air. On the D3's (and most LR's) they are quite small and can be replaced with bigger ones to improve the cooling of the intake air temperature also improving performance and economy. cooler air = denser air = more oxygen = better performance = cooler running motor and lower EGT's (exhaust gas temperatures) Too higher EGT's can damage your turbo.

Peter is able to do all the above for you. (i would do them in the above order also)
Congrats on your new vehicle. They are awesome. Sold my Puma and bought my first one 6 months ago after arguing with myself for almost 2 years. I dont regret the change at all although I miss my Defenders character.

Wow, thanks Bruce,

These appear to be minor conversions, have you any idea of cost?

Maybe I should consider these on my next service.

Speak to Peter. Everything is pretty inexpensive except for the intercooler.
