Hey All,

I was hoping someone could help me, my amateur experience and limited time I had in this lead me to this situation where I have wired CAT7 in a bus fashion to all my radiators, I was going to use KNX for this but my limited knowledge in this area let me down. So currently it seems I have 2 options:

1. KNX with Loxone:
Which would require the following Kit as an example:
- ABB SV / S30.160.1.1 Power supply standard, 160 mA, RE, 160 mA, KNX BUS PSU
- ABB VAA / S6.230.2.1 Valve Drive Actuator, 6-gang
- ABB 2CDG120050R0011 TSA / K 24.2 Thermoelectric actuator, 24 V
- ABB VA / Z10.1 Valve Adapter Item

Now the problem with the above is I can only have a Max of 4 Actuators because I have wired in a bus fashion I will need to use 1 pair twisted per actuator, this is just theoretical.

2. Loxone Tree
 - Loxone Valve Actuator Tree x5
 - Tree Extension x1

The Loxone solution is the simplest and will work for my situation I believe correct me if I'm mistaken but its damn expensive, in comparison, the KNX solution is a lot cheaper *surprised*. Does anyone have an option 3 for me or is this as good as its going to get?

i think you have misunderstood knx - its a bus system that requires a single pair of wires that goes to all devices, not a pair to each device

your options are knx or loxone tree still

you say 5 tree actuators - if you only have 5 zones or actuators you could use your cat7 cable to drive each one individually from loxone relay outputs if you use 24v normal actuators - an 8 core cat7 could have 3 cores together as a common 0v and 5 cores driving the actuators at 24v  which is probably the cheapest option.

Hi Duncan,

i think you have misunderstood knx - its a bus system that requires a single pair of wires that goes to all devices, not a pair to each device
that's how I have understood the KNX system but my initial silly understanding was that each actuator just connects to the BUS but I believe that's not the case and needs to connect to a KNX Actuator with relays.

BTW I absolutely forgot that I have 24v outputs on the miniserver excellent suggestion and i should have enough pairs to do it!!

I really do like the loxone solution using tree though, but budgets not approving that one!

yes i made the same mistake - i assumed that a knx actuator valve would connect to the bus, but the one you linked to appears to be a rebranded mohlenhoff alpha 5 one, the same as the loxone one.

I have underfloor heating and TRV controlled by loxone. The underfloor heating supplier , see https://www.underfloorheating.co.uk/profitherm-actuator-24-v-normally-closed-c2x24399646, supplies a variety of different 24V and 240V actuators. I control all the actuators via a 24V DMX controller via DMX extension. Also works for the LED lights.

That's great John, would you have more details on the DMX Device you used?

brought on Amazon, look for "High Power 24 Channel RGB 3A/CH DMX512 Controller Led Decoder Dimmer". Have 2 installed , one for 12V and another for 24V.
