I am looking to put a couple bends in a 400x400x4mm sheet of steel. The bends will be sharp 90 degrees and about 5cm from the ends of the piece and facing in opposite directions making the sheet a sort of right angled, elongated z shape

Do we have the gear to do this?

We have a bender, but I think it's less than 400mm wide (possibly 300) and I'd be very dubious that it can handle 4mm steel. Probably 3mm aluminium, 1mm steel.

There's a steel fabricator (possibly more than 1)  in the arches near cambridge heath station. They might do it.

I guessed as much. The machine looks about as thick as the material I am trying to bend! I tried the roof rack people and Fish Bros on cambridge heath road but even they can't do it. I'll have a look for someone else or find another way to do it, cheers for your reply anyways :)

The sheet metal brake I loaned to the space is wide enough, but for 4mm
steel you're going to need something hydraulic to bend it, not manual.

Perhaps cut a crease into the metal where you want the bend with an angle grinder and some kind of guide? Might make it easier..
