After clarifying with Badri and Sarasu, we can't make the quiz board now since is amounts to an unfair modification of the selection criteria. Every committee changes it anyway, but that is done based on the assumption that no one will notice. So the new committee will need to take a call on whether or not to constitute a quiz board.

Consequently, PFA the mail I sent to everyone right now with the updated criteria for LnD. It's just the quiz board criteria + LnD criteria.

Hi everyone,

In order to ensure greater promotion of quizzing, debating and literary activities as well as ensure organizational efficiency considering the increase in the number and scale of LnD events over the past few years, a decision was made to divest organization and facilitation of quizzing activities to an affiliated, autonomous board along the lines of other Boards such as the ADR or MUN Board. It was hoped that this would also stem any decline in the organization of quizzing in Law School and permit greater focus by interested members of the SBA on organizing specific LnD activities that they feel most passionately about.

In the absence of any provisions in the SBA Constitution dealing with the creation of sub-committees or autonomous bodies by ABCs, and in the absence of any clearly laid down procedure, a decision was made to diverge the functions for next year. Indeed, Article 3 j) of the SBA Constitution states "The ABCs shall have the responsibility to enable and facilitate the conduct and co-ordination of their activities for the benefit of the SBA and shall be entitled to take appropriate decisions in this regard." Article 3 k) states "The ABCs shall issue appropriate guidelines, as and when necessary, in the conduct of their activities. Once issued, these guidelines shall continue to operate till amended. Such amendment shall be prior to the holding of their activities."

As a reading of the SBA Constitution as well as precedence in the formation of other Boards will show, there is no unconstitutionality in any ABC creating a Board or a similar autonomous body. The problem, however, arises with other rules and conventions.

The selection criteria of LnD cannot be changed at this time since notice has to be given at the beginning of the year when the selection criteria is announced so that students can work towards fulfilling that criteria. Since the decision was to make the LnD selection criteria for quizzing the selection criteria for the Quiz Board and keep the remaining criteria as the LnD selection criteria, this division creates an unfair modification in the selection criteria of LnD.

We believe that the fairest way to evaluate any member for a student body meant for quizzing is the criteria which LnD has followed over the years. The division of the selection criteria, at this stage, amounts to a retrospective change in the selection criteria and is thus unfair. Consequently, any such autonomous body can only be created by the new committee next year.

We hope that the new committee which will be formed will consider the issue outlined above and take appropriate measures to ensure that the needs of the SBA are fulfilled and quizzing, literary activities and debating are efficiently organized and promoted next year, as they deserve to be. We hope that the new committee to be constituted will be, as LnD has always been, a forum for those interested in debating, quizzing and literary activities to come together and facilitate the conduct and co-ordination of these activities for the benefit of the SBA.

Thus, the application criteria for both LnD and a Quiz Board stand rescinded with no applications being accepted for the Quiz Board.PFA the new LnD Member Selection Criteria for 2013-14.

As mentioned in the earlier mail, The Literary and Debating Society will be constituted by 10 members with 2 members from each batch (I. II, III, IV years and LLM I year).

Please ensure that your applications are vetted by the Convenor or Joint-Convenor for the committee under which points are claimed, and handed over to Sounak Sarkar (+918095945654) or Surbhi Kuwelker in the quadrangle in the Academic Block between 10 and 11 am.  3 copies must be made, addressed to the SBA President, the Faculty Advisor of LnD and to the LnD Convenor.

As always, we look forward to a great response.

(On behalf of the Literary and Debating Society)

Okay, I officially declare Vansh Gupta should not poke his nose into things not his business.
He just set back quizzing development in the college by a year. I hope this makes him really happy.

How about going ahead and constituting the quiz board with the same selection criteria?

We can still include quizzing in this years LnD criteria however we should make it clear that it will be the Quiz Board's mandate to take the initiative for quizzes. LnD can provide volunteers and logistical. If people are truly interested in quizzing then they'll join Quiz Board anyway

Or just wait till next year rather than confusing everyone right now with dual apps. Let the committee constitute normally, but just ask ur quizzer friends who u know want to join LnD to wait now and apply to quiz board later.

Ok, something which I just realised. We never sent out an earlier mail. This criteria is an improvement on previous, but it wasn't sent earlier. So, if someone now says this isn't a valid selection criteria, we'll have to answer. But here's the deal - we never sent it out because the SBA forgot to ask for it this year. Which means most committees didn't send it out this year. And, other committees have also changed rules like EMC, though we've modified a fair bit. So then, if asked, would we have to say that we'd made internal changes in the first trimester, didn't send it out because SBA never asked for it, and hence, isn't unfair? That'll affect quite a few other committees.

Suddenly this place feels a bit like a mess when you try to go by the rules. I hope nobody points this out. How the hell does one get to know all these rules?

I'm not quite sure whether to feel like it's a moral wrong by not knowing the rules. Or maybe I'm just imagining too much and no one will notice.

Or maybe Vansh will notice again. Because that's what people with Dpc vivas typically do the night before it.

If he does, we'll see. For now, any response from our side will automatically mean more scrutiny. Simply put up the older criteria (i.e. Without quiz board) on ug students alongwith Badri's mail (if necessary).
