1) Is it possible to stack lessfs ontop of btier?
2) Is there a recommended underlying filesystem for lessfs? (xfs/zfs?)
3) Has Leveldb been considered for a key/value backend?

ZFS does not seem to make sense? Unless you are unhappy with the ZFS built-in dedupe?
Ext4 or XFS will work fine.

It looks like there are some issues with LevelDB and the way data persistence is coded.

An alternative that I did investigated and looks promising is http://symas.com/mdb/ or Hyperdex.

I too was looking at hyperdex, but i was not aware of lmdb...
It looks pretty impressive, not sure what hyperdex would offer over lmdb...
Is this being planned for a near term release or just theoretical thinking at this point?

It is a bit more then theoretical.
I have an almost working port for lmdb, only hardlinks are not (yet) supported.
Porting Lessfs to any type of key/value store is actually not that much work.

Mark.

P.S. Should you be interested in the preliminary code then let me know.
I'll send to the sources.

Yes definitely I'd love to take a gander at it... Building my new storage box today, so perhaps I can give you some benchmarks later this week
