Hi Holly & Jocelyn:--
I'd love to hear more about this as well. We are looking to do that same thing. Could we connect via conference call soon?
Thanks so much,

We're recommending that staff transition into the use of Google Slides if they don't require annotation, and Microsoft Powerpoint should they want to keep the ability to write on their slides and have that be saved. We're planning to use this in conjunction with large TV monitors and either Apple TV's and iPads for writing, or Samsung Chromebook Plus used with Chrome Remote Desktop. We've trialed these solutions in several classrooms and we're hoping the transition goes smoothly. I was just curious if other districts that have successfully broken ties with SMART have encountered any snags along the way that they'd like to share? My goal is to help staff transition and make it as painless as I can. We plan to export current Notebook files into Powerpoint and then move them into Drive so that they can be made into Google Slides presentations for the collaborative aspect. We are BYOD in grades 6-12, so we are looking for the best way to share information with kids on their own screens versus one spot in the room, so that's fueling much of this change.
Thanks in advance for any insight you may have!

The standouts for me:
- They had a tight message and focused on the "why" of the transition, which centered around engagement, accessibility and collaboration. They started with this message and emphasized that they wanted teachers using technology where the kids are using it. They are 1:1 chromebooks in 3-12.
- They focused on a mix of online and face-to-face training that was called "Flexible Presentation Tools" that really sought to inspire teachers and show them all of the things they didn't know they could do in Slides. The bingo game concept they used to kick it off is fantastic!
- The online self-paced flexible PD had a large variety of methods to share how people are creatively using slides with video how to's included.
- They did a listening tour to hear concerns. They focused on the question, "What is it that you are trying to do instructionally that you can't do without Smart Notebook" and then went to find solutions to those problems.
- They offered more whiteboard spaces, paid curriculum writing time, subscriptions to Explain Everything, and a variety of tools that could assist in this process like iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.
- They made laptops with Smart Notebook available to check out for the summer to convert files to PPT and then drag into Drive.
- They assisted teachers who needed help with exporting slides, and then turned their focus to how they could rethink what they have now and make it more collaborative and effective.
- They emphasized the ease of collaboration in Google, and the fact that departments can build Slides together.
- For those that struggled the most, they really worked to drill down on what they needed and attempted to solve those problems. They had some small offerings of extended time, etc. and used that as a gauge for how the transition was going.
- They asked for feedback from teachers at every PD session (Google Slides moving smiley faces into jars) and were able to see attitudes slowly shift over the 2 year transition.
There's more, but this was what I took notes on :)
