Hi everyone, just looking at Holiday dates etc and wanted to know if
anyone was interested in a trip again this year, usual time end of
April, start of May to make most of Bank holidays. Last year myself
Rob and Barry took a jaunt up to Scotland. Rob sadly had bike issues
and was unable to complete the trip but a great time was had none the
less.
I would really like to do Europe again, maybe camping in France or
Switzerland but open to ideas..... Sadly due to financial issues at
present this may be my last chance for some time as the bike has to go
after May !!!!... breaks my heart but needs must at the minute and
the april/May time is my only date option.
Anyway let me know your thoughts... it would be nice to get something
booked up asap.

Hello!

Yes definitely on for this depending on dates :-)

Selling the bike?! Oh no, but be a nice last hurrah for the triumph,
off to Europe at least!

Be nice to see everyone again.

Cheers,

Hi Martin,
I cannot do Easter weekend because I'm talking the family to my
folks.

I might be able to do one of the May Bank Holidays. I'll ask the
missus tonight. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do any of the
planning this time so I'll have to rely on you this time.

If I cannot get away in May I was wanting to redo last years
Scotland trip instead.

Martin,
I'll have a word with the missus tonight. The weekend before is
Easter and I'll be getting back from my folks' late on Monday. I'll
be working Tues, Wed, & Thur that week too.

Apologies beforehand if I cannot make that weekend.

Hi Martin,
Sorry mate, I'm not going to be able to make 29th April. Like I
said yesterday I'll have just got back from a family trip a few days
earlier and will be working all week. I won't have time to get myself
organised and the bike ready to do in time.

If you could possibly push it back to 27th May then I'll be up for
it.

With Switzerland in mind, Calais to Geneva is about 500 miles on the
motorway but lots more on the back roads. Just about doable in 4
days. The Swiss Alps would be a real treat.

Thats exactly where i wanted to go as i missed the last alps trip but sadly i cannot move dates... guess its no then. Sad way to end but thats life. Would have been nice to do the trip before selling, to be honest that was making the sale easier to swallow. Thanks for trying Rob i appreciate that.

Can't you sell the Tiger and get something older and cheaper? I sold
my Versys for only £2k and that was only 3 years old.

Hi Barry, other than yourself and Rob there has been no other corespondance re the summer trip dates!!... i am desperate to get away (Europe) for this last time before the bike has to go. The original bank hol dates of 29th april - 2nd May incl would have been my choice but i know Rob cannot make it. I can be a bit flexible but cannot do the other dates Rob suggested of 27th May -

Still waiting to hear if he can do any other dates but failing that are you able to do the original 29/4 - 2/5 dates?   Is anyone else able to ?  are there any other variations?

Would love to come along chaps but alas, fear will not be able to, as
already committed to various rides, and money might be tight as wife
works for Oxfordshire County Council, and cuts are expected. : ((
Have fun though!

Yes, can still do 29/4 - 2/5 dates.

Would've been nice to see an ER-5 Keith!!

Just in case anyone is reading this and think we're all bunch a loons
that go speeding off to the continent. We don't - everyone goes at
their own pace and if raindrops tumble you can cheerfully predict I'll
be tiptoeing along at the back :-)

Cheers, Baz

I don't have the stamina anymore to do long trips. What I do have thought is fond memories of the 4 trips I joined to all on around Europe.

Many thanks.

Hi Martin,
Sorry, didn't see the post until now.

I'll ask the missus. I might be able to swing it. Please go ahead
and start working out routes and costs. Maybe someone still has the
routes from the last Alps trip?

I'm going to have to earn some brownie points because I'm planning
on lots of days out this year doing bloke stuff with mates. I was
hoping to rerun the Scotland trip with some work mates but that might
have to slip to next year.

Thats great news Rob.... can you confirm which dates you are saying you can do now as i thought you were going to Euro Disney!!

Ok i will try and start planning , very busy with work and social probs but i am going to go come what may so any help you can give Barry would be much appreciated. Also my sat Nav died i the rain in Scotland and cannot warrant cost of new one.

Does anyone have the details of the last Switzerland trip anywhere?

Would like to keep costs down as much as possible so maybe camping is the way to go... what say you Barry?

Hi Martin, I remember we stayed in the Ibis in Sion and it was good, think i payed £170, that was for 2 nights, 2 meals and a few shandys, all in all not bad.
The other hotels were outside Switzerland, one in Nancy, think it was an Etap, cant remember the other.
At the time we went, petrol there was about half the price here and France. It is a fantastic place to visit, you won't regret going!! wish i could come with you, but am bikeless at the mo!

Been bikeless for over a year now!! gutted with this weather wer'e having. Will get another bike when i can afford it, looking at getting a cruiser next though! Really miss the trips, cant wait to get back to them.
The thing that surprised me about Switzerland was how hot it was in the valleys and lakes, didn't expect that! Though im sure Baz will tell you all about it!

Hi Martin, I remember we stayed in the Ibis in Sion and it was good, think
i
payed £170, that was for 2 nights, 2 meals and a few shandys, all in all
not
bad.
The other hotels were outside Switzerland, one in Nancy, think it was an
Etap,
cant remember the other.
At the time we went, petrol there was about half the price here and France.
It
is a fantastic place to visit, you won't regret going!! wish i could come
with
you, but am bikeless at the mo!

Jason.

Hi Chaps
Sorry for picking up on this one so late, I’m afraid I’m guilty of not
paying so much attention to this site lately. Has anything been
arranged for the long weekend of 29 April/2 May. Are you still
thinking of going to Switzerland. I’m probably up for a trip that
weekend, anything to get out of London and the wedding fever, but not
sure about Switzerland so early in the year as Easter (or just after)
is still the ski season and there is a chance that some mountain
passes may still be closed or at best icy . When we went a few years
ago it was in late June for that very reason.
Most went for 5 days (except Jack who went for 2 more weeks but did
include the rest of France and Spain ) and did the run down from
Calais to Mulhouse near the Swiss border in one day on the motorways.
I left half a day before and avoided the Motorways mainly apart from
the first 100 miles. In fact I arrived at 4pm in Mulhouse and the
others turned up at about 7pm so it didn’t take that much longer on
the scenic route. The route I took, purely by chance, turned out to be
very good as so many of the less major French roads are and I
definitely want to go that way sometime again. If any one is
interested I’ll post it on here. There used to be an area on this site
for such things and photos etc can’t seem to find it right now?

I work with a German girl, who knows a few good biking roads in the
Black forest area which is in that direction but not so far and of
course no so high either and which should have better weather this
time of year than the high alps.
Probably short notice but if anyone is interested please let me know
and I’ll try and sort out a route.

Pete

Hi Pete,

Martin and I were going to go but we've both had a few things to sort
out.

I'm still trying to sort out panniers for the 14...which aren't
cheap :-)

Hi Barry
Not sure from your posting if you and Martin are going or not?

But if you do go to Switzerland at the end of April take a look at
this web site which provides the dates the various mountain passes are
closed. Most of the passes we went over a few years ago in June are
currently closed. i.e. the Furka, Susten Grimsel, San Gotthardo and
Nufenen.
There is another web site in German which gives more precise weather
conditions, snow or ice on the road etc but I can’t seem to find it
currently.
http://www.alpineroads.com/passes.php

If you are going have a good trip.
Cheers
Pete

As I said in my last post here is the route I took last time avoiding
much of the motorways. I’d certainly do this route again.

Calais (lunch time crossing)
A26 (motorway)
Cambrai
N43 Charleville-Mez (over night here in the Formula 1 we have all used
before)
E44
Sedan
N43 Douzy
D964 (Fantastic road following the river south)
Verdun
D964
Saint Mihiel
D964
Void Vacon
N4 (motorway)
Nancy
N59
N159
A35
Colmar
A35
Mulhouse (Over night in the Etap hotel)
There I met up with you lot and we traveled on to Sion for a couple of
nights as Jason said.

Etap's are like indoor camping. Basic rooms. Comfy enough. Shared
showers and toilets.

There's nothing much to them at all. I was happy enough staying in them
but I wouldn't take the family.

Almost right Rob but you are describing the Formula 1 hotels ( like
the one in Charleville we stayed in). The Etap hotels all have on-
suite bathrooms where the Formula I don't. They are both part of the
"Accorhotel" group of hotels.
Yes basic, modern clean and good for overnight stops. The Etaps are
located normally out of town sometimes in industrial areas which is
why they are cheap. Plenty of French families seem to use them for
overnight stops as this is what they are intended for and you used to
be only able to book them for a maximum of a few nights at the most
(not sure of the situation now).

Yes, I remember now. Like the one by Luxembourg airport. I remember
the en-suite that was in my room was just about big enough if I walked
in sideways. I think it used to be a cupboard.

I seem to remember Jason made a friend in the bar that night :-0

Yep they are all "pod" construction and all look the same inside
wherever you are in Europe. Just checked them out on the net not
nearly as cheap as they were either !!! As you say Rob like camping
but dryer.

Now now Rob! What happens in a Luxemburg hotel next to an airport stays in a Luxemburg hotel next to an airport!!!
She was a bit fiesty though!!
My impression of the Etaps we stayed in was fine, cheap, but perfectly suited to our needs. Didn't like the formula 1 so much. Im hoping to be traveling France next month, by car! intend to camp down in the south for a week with the wife(new) and kids, i looked at the Etap's for an overnight stay, but they only seem to have rooms for upto 3, i've booked with another group all over France, http://www.simplyhotelsfrance.com. 46 euro's for upto 5 people in the room. Im offshore in the northsea at the mo, swaying back and forth on a ship!! where' that bucket???

Great to hear you are getting some new wheels Martin. I still have my Z750. It has never failed it's MOT in spite of being 10 years old now. New brake pads, new tyres and a new battery are all I've needed to buy except for the routine oil changes. Wish I could sign up but age and detiorating health means spending more than the occassional 2/3 hours on my bike could carry an hightened degree of risk. Hope you manage to get it back together. I live in Poole, Dorset now so if you are ever in the area give me a call on 07801 704075 and I'll buy you an ice cream.

Cheers!

Hi Martin,

I'm still riding about and am running a couple of 1940's BSAs.

One has girder forks and a sidecar attached, which is different to say the least.

You can see more at:

I took it down to my brother's in Huddersfield (about 150 miles from here) and it took 7 hours...
Speedy it is not.

I'm always looking for sidecar passengers!

Hiya Simon.  My first ever bike was a 1957 BSA C15 250cc. Bought it in 1965. Oh! Happy Days. Got it to the ton once coming down a big hill in Wales with a strong tail wind.  Wish I still had it today even if it would mean bruised ankles from the kick start. Nice to hear from you. Jack

Hi Jack,

Blimey, that was fast on a C15.

I can remember going down a steep hill in Derbyshire, somewhat carefully, on the ER-5 and being overtaken by a pedal cyclist...

I think this was all observed by Phil Roethenbaugh and possibly Bazza, so it must have been on some ER-5 outing.

Hi everyone.

I'd love to do a trip but I'm still recovering from 2 years of intermittent work.

Next year I should be in a better financial position though.

My old GS needs to get another trip under its belt even though it has done over 100,000 miles now.  The ZZR1400 doesn't have panniers but it could do a trip so long as we're not camping.

If we do go next year I'd like to go to Switzerland.

If there is a trip this year then I'll join you for a day if you're passing my way.

Hi Simon, hope you are well along with all the other old ER5'ers.

I have a recolection of the mad cyclist incident, i also have a vague recolection of a cyclist in a heap at the bottom of the hill though these may be unrelated memories :-/

Life has changed somewhat around here too, i've recently become a dad and i'm living in Stafford. Have got a Fazer 1000 in the stable as well as a 2001 ER5 for mum (i still enjoy riding ERs, looking back there are no regrets about owning them), in the last few weeks i've also managed to get my project 1965 BSA Bantam on the road which has its charms but is still a little on the unrelaible side.

As an asside is anyone planning to attend the Stafford Classic bike show this weekend? Hope to make it up there on Sunday but with the carb in pieces and the weather forcast not looking good it will be in the car and not on the Bantam as planned. (oh well, it's only a few miles away anyway).

Looking forward with interest to any proposed Euro trips next year as I plan to move to Germany in the next few months.

(wheelie) Phil

Glad to hear things are going well and congratulations on becoming a Dad!

Whereabouts are you going in Germany?
I’m sometimes in Essen so I guess you’ll be at the other side of the country!

Hope you get the Bantam more reliable soon. It should prove to be a good bike.

Hi Simon, good to hear from you again.

The house is Ten minutes from Frankfurt Hahn airport out in the country, looks not too far from Essen considering the size of Germany though i would guess at least a 2 hour drive between the two.

I've almost fixed the Bantam... took carb to the Amal stand yesterday at the Stafford show, £50 of parts later and a rebuild and the engine is sweet again, though somehow the float needle is sticking again so will have to dive in there before i hit the road for a longer run.

Good web site on the side car project.... very impressive! Even a picture of Clive without his Berry :-)
