Hey everyone... we're on our way to going 1:1 and I'm seeing the kids going to different websites and things that they should not be.  Plus, the chrome books will be going home with them, too.  I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with any company who can filter the chrome books once they go home, and here too on the school campus?  Youtube seems to be a particular problem.

Thanks for your input!

We're using GoGuardian for our take-home 1:1 program. So far it's working very well. Securly is another option for cloud-based filtering.

I've heard really good things about GoGuardian, I guess it's time to check them out!

We use securly, and being cloud based makes it easy.  It works on and off campus.  Could not be happier with them.

Awesome!! Congrats on your journey to 1:1... GoGuardian offers filtering, monitoring and anti-theft on and off campus!  We even have a YouTube filter that we built that will help with your YouTube problem -- you will be able to block by keyword, category, channel or specific video.  There are some really incredible analytics that will help you make informed decisions and open up dialogues where necessary.  Classroom screensharing is something we are also building and will be available very shortly -- you will be able to view all your students screens in a classroom, send messages, close screens when a student is off topic.  We've even had one school tell us that their student failure rates dropped by 25% because of the software and the teacher's ability to be able to keep the class on task, and engaged.   Let me know if you have any questions or want more information!  You can also check out https://goguardian.com -- there is a lot of good information there, and you can sign up to try out a free 30 day trial.  It takes maybe a minute to set up and information is almost instantaneous!

We use Securly.  It has been great and the support is terrific.  They also have a product that is free for a year where parents can see where their students are spending time.

Thank you for this information!  I will check it out when I get some time.  GoGuardian sounds like exactly what we'd need.

<Not A Salesperson>

We are very interested in GoGuardian for the reasons mentioned above.  We have been looking at it and here are some of the highlights
  • Anywhere Filtering
  • Per User History auditing
  • Per User Installed Apps auditing
  • YouTube filtering by Category and channel (way better than Youtube for Education)
  • No SSL Certs to push out (It's an extension that is installed, works in the browser)
  • Filters Chrome Browser on any platform (Not just Chromebooks) [Must Force login to Chrome Browser for this to be reliable]
  • Pricing based on Chrome Device, not user.
  • Screen Capture/Webcam picture, and GeoTagging of stolen devices.
  • Integrates 100% with Google's OUs
This is a perfect companion to managed devices and accounts.  You can also block apps, websites, web categories, through GoGuardian and Deligate any of the permissions to a group or person.

Just playing devils advocate here.  Why all the worry about what kids are doing at home?  The cost of setting up filtering is much more expensive when you throw in products that monitor and filter outside your network. As of right now there are no requirements that we filter off our network.

Wow, great information!  Thank you so much, this was very helpful.  I was wondering about the SSL certs with Google changes coming.

I used to have that view.  But we had no idea if our Chromebooks were being used for schools reasons or just entertainment.  GoGuardian gave us some insight on what the devices were being used for.  Also, it saved my bacon when I had some disgruntled parents come in thinking their child was accessing Facebook during the school day.  I could then show them that in fact their child was on facebook at 3am Saturday mornings.  Problem solved.

I guess we're just feeling that since they are school owned devices, we do need to be careful with what they are being used for.  There aren't any requirements, but, I'd like the devices to remain CIPA compliant on and off campus.

I reached out to their support staff today -- extremely helpful people by the way -- and it seems that GoGuardian will definitely be the way to go!  Pricing is fair, also.

Or lawyer interrupts CIPA in such a way that failure to do so would disqualify us for eRate since the Chromebooks are school owned devices.

Trust me I am not downplaying Go Guardian and how well it works.  I simply  have a hard time understanding why we think we need to worry about what kids are doing outside our network.  Inside the network is another discussion entirely, but unless your district is 100% chromebooks (teachers, admins, as well as students)  You still have to purchase other filtering products.  To me the most simple way to administer these programs is to make it very clear to parents, that we are filtering and monitoring everything that happens within the walls of our schools, but once the devices leave the building, it is not our responsibility to filter what the students can see and do on the internet.

This is awesome discussion, y'all!  I think my POV here is split -- I think it's important to know what's going on on devices provided by the school, for so many reasons... but, I also think that it's not all that important to be as strict on the kids at home as it needs to be at home.

We're working on building time-related profiles -- ie, have one profile of filtering needs set for school hours and another set for home hours.

This way, social can be opened up, YouTube can be more relaxed, etc.
