Hello

Can you help please? Using K9 email on my android phones and samsung Galaxy Note tablet 2014 . However on my Tablet the settings option is not visible as is on my phone. I was able to install on the tablet by importing my setting from the phone. This has not changed following the Android update to 5.1.1. I can't believe I'm the only user unable to change any of my settings on the tablet. I'm referring to the 3 dots that appear on the k9 menu. Am I doing something wrong? Have tried landscape and vertical orientation this makes no difference. Thanks in advance.

Alan

You aren't seeing the "3 [vertical] dots" (at the far right of the
menu bar), or you're not seeing the "settings" option when you open
that menu?

How did you import the settings from your phone? I haven't installed
K-9 fresh for so long that I may be forgetting something during the
setup that lets you do the import. Once installed, when at the
account level, the "settings import & export" option is under that
(3-dot) menu, with "settings" right below it. At the message and
message list levels other options are offered in that menu, with
"settings" as the last one.

I don't see the problem you are reporting on my samsung tab (not
note) 10.1 ( ~2012 version) or any other of my devices (including
other samsung tablets).

Hello Richard,

That's absolutely correct I can't see three vertical dots  so can't access the settings in order to change anything. I managed to install using the import function with a file exported from Samsung Phone. But now I'm unable to customise anything on the tablet which is obviously annoying.

I've an original Nexus 7 tablet which I'm about to recharge. Doesn't help me on my larger Note as this is the Tablet of choice today. As mentioned above it seems likely that this has been seen before?

Kind Regards,

Alan

What version of K-9 do you have installed?

Do you see the menu bar in general -- the account-level one should
have things like search/refresh/compose/new account setup, but just
missing the 3-dot vertical icon, which is the right-most item -- or
is the whole menu bar missing?

In the account view, do you see the folder icon on the right at the
end of the account(s) line(s)?

What I'm trying to figure out is whether your screen size is being
sensed wrong and part of the template is going off the (right) edge
or whether there is something else going on.

If it seems like it might be a screen sizing issue, you might want
to try to install a windowing app like MW-Pen App Enabler:

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.xperiacle.multiwindow.enable>

It lets you open apps that you've installed under it in resizeable
floating windows. If you're running into an odd screen sizing issue,
this might be a work-around.

[Even if it doesn't solve this problem, it's a very nice app as you
can open multiple applications, each in their own floating window.
On a decent sized tablet (10"+) it's very useful. It can be handy on
a phone-sized screen, but not nearly as useful since the font size
on the apps will be rather small. The pen on a Samsung Note device
makes working with the windows very easy.]

On Samsung devices, there's a hardware menu button, so Android doesn't show the three dots to save space in the bar. Tap your hardware menu button and see what happens.

Sent from my Nexus 7 with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity.

Hello Dennis,

Forgive me but I've just searched the web and it says the hardware menu button is obsolete since Android 2.3? Can I still find this ? As you and Richard have hinted it's a just this single feature that's missing on my Tablet 10.1 , it's visible on my phone and and Nexus 7. Attached is a screenshot captured from the screen on my Samsung 10.1 2014 running 5.1.1.

Thanks again.

Yes, Android wants it to be obsolete, but many devices still have them, like all of my Samsung devices.

However, I can't see any hint of one on Samsung's web pages, so perhaps they've caught up. The 7" tablet I got as a bank promotional recently had one, so I assumed yours did too.

Right, that hardware menu button went away a long time ago.

I have both a samsung 10.1 tab (~2012) and their 12.2 note tablet.
Neither has the hardware menu button, and both have the K-9 provided
3 (vertical) dots menu option instead (as is the case with all my
other apps).

It's possible that for some reason K-9 *thinks* you have the
hardware menu so isn't showing it in software. Is the app-provided
menu missing from other apps?

You might try the MW-Pen App Enabler app that I suggested, it might
tell K-9 something different about the device/screen so you might
get that menu button back. [It's a samsung-note specific app, so I
believe it should install on your device.]

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.xperiacle.multiwindow.enable>

By the way, your screen shot showed the message list menu. Is the
3-dot menu option missing from the account-level screen too?

On my Samsung devices, long pressing on the bottom-left button (the one
that brings up a list of the running apps when pressed quickly) acts as
a hardware menu button. I tested this in k9mail, and it does bring up
the same menu as the three dots.

Interesting -- the things you learn. Thanks, this could be useful in
general.

It works that way, with various apps including K-9, on both of my
samsung-note (android-5.x) devices (a phone and tablet), but on my
samsung tab 10.1 (android-4.x) it brings up the list of installed
apps. On a nexus-5 there doesn't seem to be support for a long-press
on that hardware button. [The K-9 provided menu button displays fine
on all these devices.]

Hello All,

Thanks for all of your help , in truth I've made little progress so far.

a) I can't see the version number as that's in About , within settings I believe and can't access. However I recollect it updated over the last day or two to Version 5.xx or similar. It's never worked on any prior version on this device in so far as the three dots.

b) The three dots are missing in both menus as suggested.

c) The MW Enable does little as it requires the pro version for 2 out of the 3 options and I was sure which option to select?

d) Can't get the 'long press' on the left hand button to do anything for me.

All a bit frustrating, all other apps seem to work fine as far as I'm aware.

The tab note 10.1 (2014) has a dedicated menu button; my wife has one of these. Apps don't display the 3-dot menu on this device because you should tap the left button (the one that is not the back button).

This is the device with an S-pen, right?

Gary,

You've fixed it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well how simple is that ... Yes you were correct it has the S-pen

Thanks to all of the others for your help.

Very annoying really as all other apps I use just seem to work. Why did they adopt this other approach I wonder?

Yes I was right it has version 5.008 installed.

Thanks again.

I came across this post while trying to find the K9 menu button on my Samsung S3 Mini. The same thing happens, there's no '3 dots' menu, you have to briefly press the bottom left button. I have K9 version5.010 & Android 4.1.2 Same thing seems to be happening within the accounts. If this is not documented somewhere ( apologies if I missed it!), maybe worth putting a note about it somewhere?

To me given it happens on every app it feels like something Samsung should be documenting.

That said it's may be worth having a 'device specific notes' section, even if this didn't make the cut for that.

I'll open an issue against the website to remind me to do it.

It's a good point, and now I know about it I can find a lot of online
references to the Samsung Settings Button :-) It's odd that I never
noticed this before as I've had the phone for almost a year, but that
may be because I was using a custom ROM until recently and have now
reverted to standard. Anyway, my thanks to this forum for helping me end
a couple of hours of frustration.
