Automatically delete e-mails after retrieved by K-9?

Been clicking around for ages now on my phone and have not been able to find the right setting.

This is what I want: I want e-mail that is retrieved by K-9 to be automatically removed from my e-mail server.

I have set up a separate e-mail address that forwards e-mail to an address I have specifically created for my phone (due to restrictions by my provider). E-mail is collected properly by K-9 but it leaves the message on the server. I would like to know how (if possible) I can set up K-9 to remove the message after it has downloaded it.

TIA

Greetz

Are you using IMAP or POP3?

Hi Seth,

Sorry for my late reply and thanks for taking the time to reply!

My e-mail account is configured as POP3.

Would I be able to achieve what I want when using IMAP?

Looking forward to your reply!

Best regards,

Jan

Very much not. POP3 would be the way to go for what you want to do. IMAP
is really designed for checking mail from multiple places.

I have this recollection that the deleting from the server option was
missing last time someone brought it up. But that's supposed to be the
default behavior for POP3.

Hi Seth,

Thanks again!

So no IMAP but stick to POP3.

If I understand you correctly it should be possible to configure a POP3 e-mail client to delete the message after collection but somehow K-9 does not support this (anymore).

Should I be looking for another client or do you suppose the devs might come up with a fix?

Looking forward!

I suspect it's being treated as a bug, but I think a dev would have to
say for certain.

So I went and searched the archives and found this thread:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/k-9-mail/pop3|sort:date/k-9-mail/Cj22OgP2iO0/-LiFQPkyRacJ

The problem was that the option to leave the mail on the server doesn't
exist. So it may be deleting from the server by default. I honestly
don't know, I don't use POP3. I was just messing with the settings
looking for options trying to help someone else.

I wouldn't recommend saving all your emails on your phone and deleting from the server even if that was an option.  if your phone is stolen, broken or you get a new one, all your emails will be lost.  leave the emails on the mail server so that you can access them from anywhere.  if you need to delete some mail (ie trash/spam) from the server, do it through a web interface.

You may have missed the part where Jan has e-mail forwarded from another
account to an account specifically set up for the phone. I'd concluded that
the e-mail is saved on the original account.

ah, got it!

in that case, go into the account setting for fetching mail and uncheck Sync Server Deletions.  then periodically go into the mail server and delete all the mail.

Not that it matters, but what difference does it make if your mail is on 2 mail servers.  Maybe it's time to re-think if the original mail provider - are the restrictions are worth the trouble.  There are plenty of others ;)  If it's a work account, I'm sure they don't like corporate mail being forwarded to an outside mail server. Even if you delete it, the mail provider still has copies.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your answers and suggestions. Much appreciated.

Let me explain a bit about my situation: I just switched to another provider because I noticed with my previous provider sometimes mail did not arrive. When I started to use the new provider it became apparent that there was a problem when more then one device is polling the same e-mail box. To avoid simultaneous polling I decided to forward mail to a dedicated account (with the same provider) for my phone. This works rather well. But... I discovered this weekend that the e-mail box I set up for my phone was growing. Since I have a maximum of 250MB of storage with this provider (I should not need much more since I don't need an elaborate website) my growing phone e-mail box was becoming a problem. And lazy as I am I was/am looking for a solution where e-mail in this box is automatically removed after fetching so I don't have to clean up the box once in a while.

If K-9 does not support this feature I have two options left: remove e-mails periodically of look for another app that will remove the e-mail after fetching.

I will have a look around in the store to see if there is an app that does what I need. I rather like K-9 so I hope I can find a solution that works in K-9.

Thanks again!

Best regards,

Jan

Are you using IMAP or POP3 with the provider? If POP3, I *strongly*
suggest using IMAP instead. It's designed with this purpose in mind.

POP3 == old and busted
IMAP == new hotness

I agree, POP is old and antiquated for the web today. When storage space cost a lot, mail providers used pop3 accounts so mail would be downloaded and stored on your computer and removed from their servers.  It worked fine until people wanted to view mail on multiple devices.  If the mail is downloaded to the computer and removed from the server, you can't view it on your phone.

Your POP mail server may have a timeout setting if there are too many poll requests within a specific time frame.  The mail server then locks out all requests for a period of time.  This is probably why you are having an issue with multiple devices polling a POP account and not getting mail updates.

upgrading to an IMAP account is your best solution.

Hi Guys,

I will check tonight if the provider supports IMAP and change my settings accordingly.

Will let you know...
