Interesting one this Quent. Is it the one where he states that Verne often used fake names when travelling? Best John

If not, there is definitely a Verne biography that says he used assumed names on his travels. Can anyone enlighten us?

It's a long time ago when I read Allott's book, but I think it's still interesting. The biographical parts are totally outdated (repeating the often unreliable information of Marguerite Allotte de La Fuye's biography of 1928), but the literary comments, especially on Verne's relations to romanticism, are fine, independent and sometimes illuminating. But time has changed and it's impossible to work seriously on Verne without considering the numerous revelations of the Bulletin de la Société Jules Verne in the last six decades. Have a look on the table of contents: https://societejulesverne.org/bulletin/TABLE_DES_MATIERES.pdf

Dear Volker, can you summarise these revelations so I can comment upon them in the context of Quent's question. Best John

Allott is good because he treats Verne seriously, as a literary figure, within the Romantic and scientific context, and because it's well-written. But, for pure biography, it contains very little that is new, and must be complemented with reading of Ducrest, Jules-Verne and a comprehensive fully-researched modern biography.

Dear Bill, In agreeing with Allott's nuanced opinion of the romantic and scientific context of Verne's novels, do you have an opinion on Verne extrapolating into this in terms of a full tried and tested (amongst 19th century French authors) 'roman a clef' in such novels as Begum's Millions, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas and The Mysterious Island?  Best John
