Help regarding this quote

I have seen this quote attributed to "The Basketball Diaries"  in several places online.

“It was a dream, not a nightmare, a beautiful dream I could never imagine in a thousand nods. There was a girl next to me who wasn't beautiful until she smiled and I felt that smile come at me in heat waves following, soaking through my body and out my finger tips in shafts of color and I knew somewhere in the world, somewhere, that there was love for me.”

And there is something very similar in the book. I think it's when Jim takes LSD. 

However, I just re-read the book and then listened to the audio version, and I am pretty sure I didn't encounter it at all. So I am wondering f somebody can help me out. Is it actually from "Basketball Diaries"? If not, where? Thanks!

Well, what he *actually* wrote is on pages 176-177 of The Basketball Diaries. The “quote” you found basically took an axe to it then pasted together a few splinters. My guess is it may be dialog (or voiceover) from the movie, as the axe/splinters technique seems to be the movie’s primary approach to the original material.

Thanks very much, Cassie. As we all know, things make their way around the Internet like wildfire so there I was, seeing it in multiple places and thinking Jim actually said it.

He did write the words. But someone else hacked them out of a longer piece. Whoever did the hacking could’ve added a bunch of ellipses to indicate where words, sentences, and paragraphs were removed. That’s why I think the “quote” was probably transcribed from the movie.
