Version confusion. What are 1.6, version 2, 2.3?

Hi,

I am completely new to Jenkins, so starting on the home page.

The homepage says: "Get 1.651.2 LTS .war or the latest 2.3 weekly release".

Right below that line, it is stated:

Jenkins 2 is here. Learn more, (which mentions a lot of new features.)

Now, do I download 2.3, is that the new version 2?

Also, I'd like to run this in a docker container, but there does not seem to be an official version 2 release of that, only a 'weekly 2.3'.

I'm very sorry, but I'm confused. Should my conclusion be that version 2 is not released yet? In that case why is the weekly version called 2.3?

Can someone clear this up for me? Since I'm starting with Jenkins I don't want to waste my time on an older version.

Thanks,
Ron

Hi Ron,

The jenkins 2 series is pretty new. currently there are only weekly releases available (latest 2.3). the latest LTS (Long Term support) is still on the jenkins 1 series. But don't worry jenkins 2 is compatible to jenkins 1. so if you want to install a productive high sensible environment choose the LTS version. after a few weeks also the LTS will be upgraded to the jenkins 2 series.

Ok, thank. Confusing that even though version 2 is not released yet, they're already at 2.3.

Regular Jenkins releases are published weekly, and 2.0 has been released a few weeks ago. Therefore, 2.3 is the current 'weekly' release.

LTS releases are published monthly and generally more stable than the weeklies. A new baseline gets chosen every three months, with three LTS releases based on it that contain bug fixes only. As we did not disrupt the regular schedule, a 2.x based LTS release will be published in early July. The official Docker image tracks this release line, so no 2.x yet (there are a few tags that were added by mistake recently, but 'latest' references 1.651.x).

Note that the versions were up to 1.656 (one-point-six-hundred-and-fifty-six), as should be expected for roughly weekly releases over eleven or so years with no major version increase. Don't call it 1.6, that was over a decade ago ;-)

Alright Daniel,

Ohh.. even though I encountered version numbering like this before, this still caught me by surprise.
Thanks for clearing it up.
