Greetings! I am writing to the list to see if anyone has ideas on a jacktrip connectivity issue. This is towards a project happening this weekend 5/25 and 5/26 at 2pmEDT:

For one of the performers, we are able to hear them clearly, but they hear us very garbled with dropouts.

We ruled out the interface and sample rates. Their bandwidth is plenty (1Gbps connection). We tried installing different versions of JackTrip. We tried connecting via Terminal instead of the JackTrip app. We tried connecting with RtAudio vs. JACK. We tried a different cloud server. They hear us clearly in Zoom audio. They also connected successfully in JackTrip for the past four years, and another performer connected successfully to JackTrip from their internet a couple weeks ago.

The rest of the group is connected well.

Any additional thoughts? Anyone interested and available to jump in on troubleshooting tomorrow morning (EDT)?

Thanks as always and favors will be returned tenfold!

how about buffer size and use of jitter buffer?
mac, windows, linux, rpi?

could you make an audio recording?

also want to mention that when disconnecting and then reconnecting too
quickly, or multiple times, the server will not have had time to clear
out the previous connection and the results could be the same or perhaps
garbled.

Hi All,

We had some major issues and worked through them. We found going for a stable latency and just forcing latency works best. We found a lot of issues with the loss concealment (which had always been fine before!).

garbled has a lot of different interpretations

check cables
reboot modem
disable wifi at the computer
keep cell phones away
turn off bluetooth
clear browser cache
close all other applications
turn off all startup apps (you can open them if needed)

Thanks so much Synthia and Dirk!

Synthia, great points.. We were already on a 512 buffer. The performer is on a Mac. I didn’t try an alternate jitter buffer strategy, that is an idea. I don’t think it was about disconnecting and reconnecting too quickly since we tried an entirely different server during troubleshooting. I will check out the “garbled” links.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a recording of what they were hearing, just a vocalized replica they attempted :)

Dirk, sounds like similar issues. I will hone in on the buffering and buffer strategies..

Thanks again!
Sarah

Interesting that Mike suggests an even larger buffer. My experience is that the isp cannot handle anything larger than 256.

Also Considering that it is only the incoming audio that is garbled I thought about a post I read in the past that found using a different Usb port for the interface cleared it up. Something about usb2 vs usb3 ports. It was in the googlegroup here.

Great suggestion about changing the USB port.. I forgot about that one!

Today the performer tried a different computer and the connection was clear for awhile. Then the garbling returned intermittently locally, though we heard them clearly in JackTrip. The connection was clear enough to get through the performance, but wasn't totally solved. We will connect again tomorrow.

The issue seems to be in the network somehow, if it's intermittent. And since it's occurring on multiple computers, multiple versions of JackTrip, etc, and the router was restarted multiple times.

One topic another person brought up off-list was hardware/bandwidth mismatch. So if the computer hardware can't handle 1Gbps internet, it may cause a bottleneck. This 1Gbps internet connection is new since the last project with this performer. The ethernet cables are new and high-end. Again it worked on another performer's computer from this place a couple weeks ago, but the computer was much newer. Perhaps a network test could be run on the internet connection to see about quality of service and the throughput to the computer.

There was one instance today when the performer froze and returned after about 2 seconds, so that further points to a network issue.

Any thoughts on quick network testing tools besides the more elaborate iperf etc.?

Thanks again,
Sarah

Sarah,

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before: I have had trouble in the past
when the JackTrip interface is not selected in front of other screens.
It has not happened again for a while, and I never quite figured out the
cause.

Here's my recording of what was happening at around :25 in:

And closed issue #663 posted on Github:

Great reminder about that factor too, Synthia!
Thanks,
Sarah
