I'd like to build some pipe berths for the rear quarters. I've seen a few pics online searching of what other J/92 owners have done. I was wondering if anyone here in the group has them? If so could you share your thoughts, likes, dislikes, build, installation ideas. Anything would be helpful as my mind is all over the place on where to begin and what I think I might want.

Thanks!
Andy

Hi Andy,

I have these in my 92s and will take  some pictures at the weekend of the construction. It's simply a batten screwed to the engine cover and ply profiled to match the hull shape.

Never slept in them but they do make that area much more usable for cushions, sails etc. plus it's dry. They also make maintenance in that part of the boat much easier.

Cheers,

John.

Hi Andy,

I have hull #108 which was fitted from the factory (J-Europe) with the full comfort pack: stove, table (Lagun) and two pipe berths. I know this all adds weight but everything is easy to remove. The pipe berths are really comfy and great for weekending with the family: wide and deep allthough a bit cumbersome to enter but once you're in there it's really snug if you don't mind the lack off height. I will take some pics over the weekend. The construction is really easy: a base of plywood on which a cushion is laid.

Cheers, Dick Heijdra

Would you please share those photos with me as well?  I'd like to add a v-berth to my boat.

Thank for any pictures and ideas. These would only be for long distance racing a few times a year. So easily removable is a great idea. I know once our crew gets in there - they would be there for a few hours sleep.

I found these pics scouring a Google image search. If this happens to be your boat - any insight on making would be greatly appreciated!

1)  The 92 is so weight-sensitive that (IMO) if you're doing a long distance race with more than four you won't be competitive.  So you only need two bunks at a time.

2)  After the race I stuck one of the v-berth cushions back there (with some life jackets under it to level one corner) and slept on it.  It fit pretty well and I slept fine (I was tired).

3)  With people sleeping on the settees you can't get out once you're in there.  (I took my pee bottle with me.)

4)  You'll need to move the batteries.  I moved mine forward anyway but it was a big project and I saw a bit of voltage drop with the long cables.

Older than 84?  Just razzin' you - the General is a kick and is making noises about going again next year = 2,000+ nm solo:

It's roughly a 250 NM race. If we were all in our 20's again I'd do it with 4. However we're all older and slower now - so we take 6. Only 2 sleep down below on the high side (or floor) at a time (weather and conditions permitting of course).

Andy,

I am thinking of getting a J 92 and sail out of Crescent Sail Yacht club in the Metro Detroit area.  I'm sure you're familiar with CSYC.  I would like to get on a J 92 and was wondering if you might need a crew before the season ends on a race.  I was unable to find anyone from your boat up at Port Huron or MAC this year to talk.  Anyway please let me know.

Finally managed to take some basic pictures of my pipe berths

Very simple construction with plywood sheets supported along the engine housing with wooded battens and profiled to match the hull. Another batten is fixed to the rear of the bulkhead between the battery boxes and hull.

If more info is needed, just let me know.

Cheers,

John.
