Now that the head has been replaced (pictures and crappy narrative to follow), I am turning my attention to the freshwater plumbing.

It's old. Yellowed. And the water that comes out of the taps is, if you put it in, say, a clean white porcelain bowl, visibly dark.

I'll do a complete dump and replace of the water in the tanks, but I suspect that the only answer is to replace the freshwater piping.

On the prior boat, I repiped everything with PEX. This was pretty easy, as it was a race boat with everything exposed, and only a few runs.

The J/40 looks to have about 8 different runs from the central distribution point and the lines are snaked around under boards and things.

I am thinking that with the (somewhat) more flexible PEX-A, I can pull the lines through with a fishtape. Or some such arrangement.

Has anyone any relevant experience to share?

Thanks in advance...

I did a 100% replacement of ever inch of potable water with Pex-A as part of our water maker install on our 42. Fair bit of work but with the expandable fittings and expansion tool we found it to be a fairly straight forward process. We replaced borh hot and cold 100% as well as every single fitting.

I replaced my hose with Pex a few years ago. The only hose I couldn’t do was the Stb water tank and the foot pump! The corners were too tight.

Easy job pulling the Pex through.
Just do it!

Sean-
What fittings do you put on the end of a PEX line to fit to a barbed outlet, as that is what most of my water system has?
Thank You ... Dick

I replaced most of the barbed fittings. In two places I used a few inch section of vinyl tubing and then used a connector to go to Pex. Uponor made fittings that would connect them. Otherwise I tried to just replace the barb fittings with screw on Pex terminals

Great!  Pex and tools on the way.  Just realized I will need to access (remove) the sinks and/or faucets.  Ugh.
Any tips?

Bottom of the sink. There are small studs on the sink lip. One in each corner and in the middle both side. Picture above. I did this project 4 years ago. Replace the sound proofing in the engine compartment.

I cheated and used a delta faucet from homedepot.

Beautiful job!  I was prowling around that compartment today.  I am a bit mystified as to how the hell I will access the underside of the sink with the transmission poking into there....
